Oyster mushrooms from a box
    #25737732 -

So my friend gave me this for the holidays, it had been sitting around over a year They said. So I wasn't expecting much. Well it fruited and I'm wondering, when should I harvest, and can I clone it for further propagation?

Sorry about the photo quality

you can definitely clone them. you have to harvest them just before the pileus starts flattening. good luck..

It looks good to me from what I can see. Some oyster strains are wispier than others. I don't see any contams at the very least! Just let it do its thing  :dancer:

So the jar is fully colonized. I'm pasturising some straw right now.

My GF wanted me to ask about using spent coffee grounds. I've heard of companies using it, but a quick Google search just shows a bunch of mold. Oppions would be appreciated.

So they started pinning in the bag, can I just throw them in a monotub? Or? Advice is welcome

I used a combo of spent coffee grounds layered with pasteurized straw for some buckets of pearl oysters I did a few weeks ago and they are pinning now! I decided to layer and not do coffee grounds alone because of the contamination risk.

I got the coffee grounds from a local shop and asked for the ones fresh from that same day. If yours aren't fresh or you just want to be sure, you could always pasteurize in quart jars in a pot of water.

I also did a bucket with straw alone to compare the difference, so we'll see what happens.

As for the pinning bag, go ahead and use it. Oysters are super resilient.

Thanks for taking interest. Those grows sounds fun. I wondered about coffee, but I saw a lot of mold when I researched it. I hope it goes well.

My bag is of pasteurized straw. I was asking how I should fruit them. Out of the bag? In a tub? Out of a bucket? I'm thinking I'll put it into a monotub tomorrow, or just fruit them out of the bag.

So you spawned the grain jar to the straw and now you want to use the straw to inoculate more substrate, correct?

Since it's a substrate bag & not a spawn bag, I would think it would be best to just fruit it from the bag, IF you want to be on the safe side & avoid contamination. I'm not sure how straw holds up as a spawning material. BUT oysters are so voracious, it might be totally fine. I was actually thinking about doing this with some of my colonized oyster straw that hasn't pinned yet. Maybe someone with more experience on this will chime in.

If you do decide to add it to some more substrate, from what I've read on here, oysters grow better laterally out of holes in the sides of buckets/straw logs rather than tubs since they need a lot of FAE. I'm still new to this so I could be wrong, but that was why I went with buckets over tubs.

No, I just want to fruit it. The bag itself is a spawn bag, I saved one from another grow and reused it here. But it's filled with substrate.

Yes, that's my understanding too. I just didn't really plan this out.

Oh ok, I misunderstood you. Oysters will also fruit just fine with the bag still on.

It looks more like a CO2 issue than a light issue.

Oh well, I ate them yesterday.

I have a petri dish I stored so I can keep this grow going.

But how would I take a spore print? Just lay it down on some foil? Just like with cubes.
