da-da-da-dunking
    #2572385 - 04/17/04 10:00 PM (19 years, 11 months ago)

I have 30 1/2 pints... Can I get a suggestion on how to dunk these at maybe 5-6 jars at a time, in the same container? There is no way I'm going to have each cake in its own individual water filled jar. Any suggestions?

The Ziplocks are a good idea.Ill have to remember that.
I just bought a smaller steralite container for $2,and put them all in and place a cookie sheet on top then a plate to hold them down.Put the lid on and i slide it on the bottom shelf in my fridge.
Ive done 24 this way.

IMO, it'd be way easier just to use the half pint jars you already have for dunking. Take the cake out, rinse it under running water to get all the loose verm off, put it back in the jar and fill the jar with water. Then just seal the lid back on and put it in the refridgerator if you plan on cold shocking. Since you have 30 half pints, I think it'd be a lot less work and a lot less risk for contams if you keep the cakes seperated in their own jar.

you know, that was my first thought, but I figured that wouldn't work well..

See this is my first time working with jars that I bought pre-sterilized and packed. And I noticed that with these cakes, they are all pretty much colonized and I noticed when flipping them, that they didn't shrink that much....... I Adon't know whats up with that, but anyway, if they haven't shrunken much, how much water could I possibly fit into the jars with them in it?? Besides, have you used this method of dunking them back in the same jars b4? Maybe its just me, but I don't remember reading about this method.
P.S 0% contamination is cool...

I don't remember reading about it anywhere either, but I've tried it several times and I know many people who have used it and I haven't heard a single complaint. If you cakes haven't shrunk much, when you rinse them under running water, the excess verm will come off and you'll make more room for water. If you notice that your cakes have sucked up all the water there isn't any water left, you can always add more during the dunking process.

dunking them in there jars does work fine.If this is your first time with cakes, listen to MMerletto you should do it that way.I just do it my way because i dont have room for all those jars in my fridge, where as the steralite container slides in there perfect.

This is my first time and i just dont see how you could fit water in their own jars. Seems like nothing would fit.

Also my cakes are almost ready to be birthed. Im going to grow half in cakes and the other half in casings, do i need to dunk the cakes that i am going to break up and use in casings?

well they do fit, alot of people do it that way.
no you dont need to dunk ones you are going to case, because the casing layer and the botto, layer add moisture, but you can it doesnt hurt, its just not needed.

When you do dunk a cake is it better to use warm or cold water (i wont be freeze shocking it)? and do i need to mix in h202 or can i just use the water from my foucet?

Also when the cakes are into the fruiting chamber should i spray it with the h202/water mix or should i just use my regular foucet water. The casings i will spray with the mix but i wasnt sure if it was necessary for the cakes.

You can use 1/10 3% H202 if you wish... but tap water should work fine. Colonized cakes are usually pretty resilient.

i do it the same as mmerletto but i don't take the cake out at all,you get some shrinkage when the jars fully colonized,i fill it up,the cake floats to the top, scrape the verm off, then put lid back on

Cervantes, alright but i had a couple different questions and i dont really know if u meant to use the h202 mix when spraying it or when dunking it or both, or if it is never needed for a cake. Also when dunking... cold or warm water?

H202 can be used in anything myc related... to add an extra layer of sterility... but you usually don't need it. Try a search.
