My first time!

Hi folks! first time registering here!
I've decided to give it a go (wish me luck). Ordered 4 syringes of P. Cubensis.
Question: when I was at the garden shop getting vermiculite i grabbed a plastic enclosed grow area, it has a black base about 3 or 4 inches high and a clear plastic just sits on top of that which has 2 vents on the top. will this suffice?

Welcome to the shroomery, p. Cubensis is a good choice for a beginner. Post a picture of the container you mentioned. If you have trouble uploading your photos, check out this link: https://www.shroomery.org/5286/How-do-I-put-pictures-in-my-post

I know the thing you're talking about. I've got one for starting seeds. I'm assuming you mean using it for a fruiting chamber. What tek are you following? It might work but I think the little vents might not give you enough FAE. Plus once you get it all loaded up it'll be very close to not tall enough for mushrooms that grow that way. If you're doing PF tek with something like GTs you might be able to pull it off. If you're growing PEs they'll probably lift the lid.
Your best bet for a first time is to pick a tek and follow it to the letter. Once you get a handle on what you're dealing with then mess around with experimenting.
Good luck with your grow.

Well I'm starting to see growth! First group of 12 jars were inoculated 7 days ago, second group of 24 were done 4 or 5 days ago.
So far there are 4 definite casualties to the evil green, and 2 are questionable. I'm thinking to not 'question' and assume they are goners.
Now, I have another dozen to inoculate. I'm wondering if i should carefully dispose of the contents of the contaminated ones and try again or just toss the whole jars.

This one is the worst one....eww :-(

If you're worried about spreading mold spores in your grow area PC the contammed jars before tipping them out and then just wash them in the sink. Or just tip them in the garden and then wash them in the sink. No point wasting a reusable jar in my mind.

I injected them with bleach and let them sit for an hour before dumping the contents and washing the jars

I open mine in a bucket of soapy water to flood the jars then dump them out in the compost pile.

That's way less screwing around than PCing them, I'm going to start doing it that way.

Well, I'm seeing some good growth on a handful of the jars:

I've had to bleach and toss a total of 11 jars, out of 36 inoculated so far.
I have 4 questionable ones placed in a different room as well (I realize just moving rooms isn't ideal but it's all I can do for now).
These 2 images are from the questionable jars:
This one the lower white growth seems to have a different texture than what I have observed so far, it seems to be more dense, sort of a 'wet' looking solid mass, whereas the other grown looks sort of a white fuzz when reaches the glass sort of reaches out in every direction.

This one has what looks like brown or copper colored growth near the dry verm layer, any ideas?

Congrats. There's a really good writeup on contams complete with pics here on the site under the contaminants section I believe. I found it a really helpful read. You have some good stuff happening there it looks like. Question? How are they getting air? Here is a link https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23130868

Thanks for the link. They're getting air through the holes in the lids. The ones that have been contaminated I put tape over and dump 40ml bleach into them and let them sit for a couple hours then dump out and clean the jar.

TOSS THE CONTAMINATED JARS!! The jars are less than $1. You'll use that much energy pressure cooking them. Plus the time that you could use more productively. If there was ZERO chance that I would spread any contaminants in my grow area, I would still toss them and spend the time learning agar! It's stupid easy and you'll be glad you did. Just my opinion. Good luck!! It's fun!!

Theres no point wasting perfectly good jars even if they are cheap, not like the spores are actually dangerous or anything and when you can just open the jar in a sink or a bucket of water theres no sense in tossing it imo.

I reuse mine all the time.
Proper sterilization will kill any remaining garbage.

well a good amount of the jars are growing nicely, some very close to 100%!

I am not planning on doing the traditional PF Tek, I'm going to spawn them to CVG.
I've seen some teks use 5 quarts of BRF cake spawn per monotub, this seems like a lot no?
Curious about the amount of spawn I should be using when I do end up having to do it, I had planned on doing 5 tubs, but with 5 quarts per tub, that only equated to about 2 tubs using every jar. It looks as though these will be ready at different times so id like to know a minimum amount of spawn to use.
Thanks in advance!

Looking good so far.
I too reuse the jars from contams, you can sterilize it easily.

My cakes seem to look strange to me. The mycellium in some of them really looks like its thin and reaching around, most of the myc I have seen in pictures are solid.....whats up?
