I use grain spawn, coir, and an unmodified tub with the lid flipped for FAE... why all the jazz, just for fun? Might need it for a greenhouse, but not a tub: which holds it's own microclimate

I’ve searched on this forum for bottom watering for shoeboxes - you mention I may have to bottom water mid flush. How is that done? What kind of water?

wet water. generally you add water by adding it. for me pouring seems to work extremely well to transfer water from one place to another.
do you really have to search for something the directions are the name of what you're doing. "bottom water". that literally is the directions.

Tap is fine. Pour some water down the corner so it goes beneath the sub. Let is sit for a few hours, then pour off the excess. With experience, you'll know how much it needs and not need to pour off the excess, but with shoeboxes it's easy enough

Ugh - thanks! Why couldn’t I find that and yeah I seemed to have over complicated something obvious. Growing mushrooms is helping me to learn to take things just as they seem
