Who are the greatest scientists? * 1
    #25732691 - 01/08/19 08:58 PM (5 years, 4 months ago)

Imo, the five greatest scientists in history are Galileo, Newton, Darwin, Einstein and Bohr. To me they are the most central and far-reaching contributors to the development of civilization in general and science in particular.

What do you think? Who would be on your list?

What is a scientist, anyway?

Cool thread topic

Newton, Gauss, Einstein are in my top five; Newton for mechanics, astronomy, and calculus, Gauss for being probably the greatest mathematician of all time, and Einstein for relativity and lasers.

The other two spots are hard since there are so many good choices - but this is good since it leaves room for many interesting answers.

I'll go with Turing for inventing computer science and Euclid for writing the Elements, which had the unintended side effect of helping to spawn Western civilization.

Nice post. Listing a top 5 is really only arbitrary; if I were to expand it out there are a bunch of other clear candidates. Copernicus, Kepler, Faraday, Boltzmann, Maxwell, Pauli, Von Neumann, Born, Rutherford, Marie Curie, Fermi, Feynman, Schwinger, Bohm, Wheeler. Those are some of my favorites, off the top of my head. I guess, including my original five, that happens to make a top 20. I'm sure I'm missing some obvious ones that need to be in there, though. Ah, I just remembered Schrodinger and Heisenberg. No way to make this exhaustive.

I would add Nikola Telsa and Thomas Edison as well. Good list Divided.
