Shoebox people - What are your ratios/amounts?

I know there can be some variation on spawn to substrate ratios and amounts of each. I just created a shoebox with 1.5 quarts of spawn (6 half-pint cakes broken up) and 2 quarts of substrate (coco/verm 50/50 and a little gypsum). 1.5 quarts of the substrate is mixed w/ the spawn and .5 quarts of substrate is a layer on top.

I wanted to see how you all prefer to set up your shoeboxes, as far as ingredients and ratios. Just want to get an idea of what's been working for you. Thanks!

Pretty close to 1:1 ratio (2qt grain + 2qt coco coir... these are quart jars 2/3-ish full), then a thin casing (1/8"-1/4") of coco coir over the top.

2 qts spawned 1:1 coir only with a top layer of coir only at spawn

Seems like 1:1 is what most people are doing, just from reading around here for a while. For BRF cakes (if that's what you've got) the range is usually more like 1:4 - 1:1, since those half pints are so precious haha. Let us know how that works out for you!

Yeah. It seems like most are not skimping on the spawn, and also opting for straight coco coir. Will set up a 1:1 on the next shoebox if these pending grain jars I've got work out.

I'm different I guess... I do 1 qt spawn to roughly 3 qts coir. I mix them together and add coir until it comes up to the line on the box. It makes it easy to level out.  If I have it I'll do 2 qts spawn to 2 qts coir. I prefer the 1qt to 3 qts tho. I cover the grains with a thin layer of coir at spawning. The picture in my caption is 1 qt spawn to 3 qts coir. I did not do a top layer of coir on that one either. I feel like I get a better yield doing 2 shoeboxes 1 to 3 then doing one shoebox 2 to 2 :shrug:

I was wondering about those pictures. Those are some nice results with 1:3. :thumbup:

a shoebox tub is 6q there's really not much you can do to fuck it up lol

1 jar spawn 1-5 jars substrate
2 jars spawn 1-4 jars substrate
3 jars spawn 1-2 jars substrate
etc... pretty easy to figure out stuff. More spawn more mushroom.

I mostly do 1:1 for the substrate size (honestly it's probably closer to 1:1.5) so that my fruits stay at around lid height.

But I thought there wasn't much nutrition in coco coir anyways, and that it was coming from the grains itself rather than the coir?

Guess I just got 1:1 from Mushboy's thread on shoeboxes. Makes sense though.

The nutes are in the grain. The coir supplies water. Too little coir means not enough water.

Coir is namely for water retention, 1:1 works as long as you can maintain humidity with adequate FAE... I've run 1:1 and 1:2 side by side with the same clone and didn't notice a difference in yeild, but 1:1 colonized, pinned, and was harvested almost 2 days faster with less resources (granted, not a lot, but depending on your work load and available space, could mean a world of difference).

I'm running RW side by side 1:1 and 1:2 currently... we'll see what's up... I know pasty reported the high spawn ratio was causing delayed fruiting with blobs and mutants; curious if climate plays more a factor then we (I anyways) have been assuming...  I Think drier climates may do better with 1:2, just having twice the water, sort of a buffer for the increase in evaporation rate; but that's speculative

Since the mycelium ends up colonizing the whole substrate anyway, do you think access to water plays a larger role than the amount of spawn you started with? Or is it pretty even between the nutrients supplied by the grains and water supply? Is it ever worth amending substrates with nutrients if you're using less spawn?

I'd suspect there's plenty of nutrition for upto 1:10... just would take forever, and be susceptible that much longer

Hmmm... do you feel the extra sub contributed to yield? Worth the resources vs spawn difference?

My 1:1 sb are typically 4 days
