Maybe give it a bottom water since is colonized... I'd assume start dry and hydrate with full colonization, but have got feild capacity dead 9n last few times

I've been measuring my water uptake from soaking/dunking/bottom watering and I'm very unimpressed... not more than half a cup uptake. So I'm in the get it right at first camp, and heavy mist between flushes. Not sure if half a cup even matters.

Once you add 3.5 quarts how much water do you lose by checking field capacity? Hopefully the answer is none.

If by checking field capacity, you mean hand squeeze... none. It all stays in the bucket.

Maybe I missed it but did you let your substrate filly colonize? it read to me like you mixed your spawn and then tried to fruit right way? maybe it's just the way you phrased it?

Many of us fruit from spawn in unmodified tubs with the lid flipped for FAE with better and faster results, than with a colonization period with restricted FAE... that's outdated misinformation... mushrooms and mycelium are aerobic organisms that require oxygen for healthy growth... also outdated misinformation:

Dark colonization- 12/12 lighting has been shown beneficial to mycelium through all stages of growth from spore to spent...
Liners - do not prevent side pins, proper surface conditions do...

Light- is not a pinning trigger,  full colonization and FAE are

Asking a somewhat related side question.... I stack these tubs two high, and I began to notice more dew on the top tubs, than the bottom tubs. The tub I am using for a subject in this thread is a bottom tub. The top tub is clearly getting warmed by the heat of the bottom tub. Have others noticed heat transfer in stacked tubs?

Heat generated by the top tub, sitting on top of the bottom tub, equalizes the temperature difference inside and outside of the bottom tub, which causes the condensation to start with... almost like having a low intensity light on the lid... I don't think it's necessarily the top getting hotter, as it's presence on top is equalizing temps

I'm pretty sure, in my circumstance, the substrate of the top tub is getting warmed by about 4 degrees more than the bottom. I have a nifty infrared thermometer and averaged the measurements of 10 tubs in this situation. The top tubs were noticeably more dewy. When I put sticker spacers between the tubs (about an 1"), the bottoms of the tubs equalized to be about the same temp again. Thats now my standard practice, but I only learned that now.

But I get what you are saying too.

Day 15: Some pinning. Heavily misting the outer edge once or twice a day, leaving the lid entirely off every other day to dry out the center, which gets too wet and almost starts pooling.

This is the tub that sits on top of the tub I'm chronicling. It was 3 degrees warmer and sweatier for the first week (heat rises) This scenario played out in three other sets of stacked tubs. Wished I could have it more even. next month I'll have shelves, I bet that will help. But it does make me wonder what the dream temp is for each of these stages. I try to keep the room air at 70, making the tub a bit warmer than that. But early in the growth, there isn't any extra tub warmth...

looking good
seen a few spots of metabolites, which could be fighting bacteria. do you use boiled/ distilled water to mist with?

Tap water is fine for misting... if it's bacterial, it was in the spawn

I often get little yellow drops. I was hoping this tub wouldn't have them. sometimes I try to dab them up with tissue.

What are your temps at? Could be simply heat stress

I keep the room air at 70. The bottom of the tub is at 77. Is that good? That tub is sitting directly on the concrete floor. The floor is about room temp, unless a tub is sitting on it, then it warms to about 75 degrees.

From the center, a few rotting buttons

from the edge, worn out, yellow surface conditions, getting dry within a few hours.

I'm still struggling with my very dry sides, very wet center. The next set of tubs that I used more water in the coir are starting to have the same dry edges... (I was really hoping it was too dry coir causing it)

I mist twice a day only on the edges and the surface conditions there are looking terrible, as usual. I'm so envious of people with even surface conditions. I remain perplexed.

I suppose it could be:

1) my 1.5" holes are too big (but wouldn't 5 layers of tape counter that?)

2) My 650g coir to 3.85Q water is still too little (It felt plenty wet, I could make a little dribble)

3) Something about my fans are wrong

4) Something about my closet getting opened 4 times a day causes the walls of the mono to condense water because of a temperature shift, thereby drying the air on the edges of the substrate.

5) My bags are still slightly bacterial and thus are heating up the substrate awkwardly and unevenly.

6) related to 5, I'm a bad person.
