Pleurotus?
    #25723203 - 01/04/19 03:39 PM (5 years, 3 months ago)

Mixed PNW urban forest, growing from pretty young alder tree

Gills/stem: see picture

Couldn't smell the oyster smell, but it was raining pretty hard and my sense of smell sucks right now because of work.

I've seen similar oyster looking things but the ruffled cap on some of the fruits and the gills just don't quite look like cultivated oysters. Looking for confirmation they're a) pleurotus ostreatus (group?) and b) edible

All fruiting from the same tree just couldn't get a good picture of the gills on the ruffled one.

I’m not a trusted identifier but those look like an oysterling rather than a true oyster mushroom. Soon enough a trusted identifier will chime in

The stipe is what leads me to believe it is not a true oyster mushroom

Thanks for the input, googling oysterlings it seems like I need to go get a spore print and see if the cap has an easily separable top layer

Update: white spore print, I printed it first on aluminum foil, this was a quick second print that didn't print too heavily.

Also here's a picture of a more complete cluster (pm if you're interested, deleted for space)

Could they be panellus serotinus? Reading online that they're actually edible

... it is possible, it could be Panellus serotinus, the species is considered not edible because of the gelatinous and bitter flesh. (gastrointestinal problems).

That makes sense, gills definitely went yellow with age which was missing in the panellus. Thanks!

Still not edible, even less so than panellus serotinus (there are at least people claiming they enjoyed it, sarcomyxa has people complaining about it)

You can eat them for sure. They're eaten all over japan so it shouldn't be an issue. Not the tastiest of mushrooms though.
ps. Panellus serotinus is the old name for Sarcomyxa serotina

Ahhh okay that makes a lot of sense, that would also explain why a picture I saw when googling panellus serotinus also showed up when googling sarcomyxa serotina. I think I'll save these for things I know I can eat in an emergency. I've got proper oysters going right now that I cloned from the same forest back in the spring
