Pins too dry?
    #25722085 -

Hey guys, its my first grow and I am not sure if I need to up the humidity. Pins to my untrained eye are looking kinda dry? What do you think?

Don't worry too much about the humidity, that only really controls how fast moisture evaporates; you need to mist the surface gently when it looks dry, and those pins are looking dry atm

Thanks! Going for a mist now.

They look fine to me.

If u think the white flake substancr on the caps is a sign of being dry, u are mistaken. Its a physical characteristic of the species.

Update today. Still not sure what is going on, if there is a lack/too much of fae, lack/over of humidity in the cakes.. Any tips will be really helpful:

Thanks

Lol yeah just keep making duplicate threads until someone tells you the answer you want to hear!

FYI guys he has a layer of "soaked" uncolonized coir in the bottom of his tub for no reason (I'm guessing he thinks it's like perlite).
He also said in the other thread he was misting daily before even getting a flush.

I think you should read a good modern Tek like bods and just follow it to the letter before experimenting with crazyness like uncolonized soaked coir.

It’s called a humidity chamber butt munch. You can use just about anything moist in your chamber (including a soaked towel) to creat RH. It’s a new Tek out there that’s supposedly suppose to work better than a sgfc. I’ve yet to try it because I don’t run cakes anymore, but I hear good things about it.

OP don’t stress. Your pins are looking fine. Just make sure to mist lightly, let evap, mist lightly, let evap, etc.. Pins have a tendency to look white/dry at first, but as they mature you’ll get your classic cubensis look.

Just don’t overmist because you think they are to dry.. if your cake was dry it would be bruising blue.

Yo 2in1 I don't like making multiple posts, I had this one open yesterday and I just posted the updated pics here to focus on the pins themselves not the chamber in total. And I did follow the tek btw. If someone could comment on how the pins themselves look and maybe help me on what they need, it would be really helpful.

It's called retarded and pointless.
I have a couple of small trays in a monotub and I only need to mist the walls twice a week max to maintain humidity.

If you were going to do it you would use perlite, but even that is pointless, it just adds additional contamination vectors, buttmunch.

Lol! Perlite doesn’t add vectors you dum dum.. there’s no nutrients in perlite for vectors to attach to. So before you go bashing on other techniques that are not your own do some research..

Thanks MadHatter, in some pics you can see some blue bruising, but only in the parts of overgrown myc on the top part. That could be throwing me off too. Here:

And on the one pin itself right underneath the cap to the right I see a small blue spot:

Have you seen stems split like this before?

Re: Pins too dry? [Re: Shr00merN00ber]
    #25724590 -

That’s just some minor bruising, nothing to work yourself up about. Just make sure when you mist you’re letting the mist fall on to your cakes to get a nice glistening look. Let that evaporate for a while till your cake is mostly not glistening anymore then repeat step one.

The splitting is probably due to to much moisture. Or it could be a rarer case of verticillium. Sometimes it can be genetics too.

How much fresh air are you giving them?

This is how I have my tubs normally, and after I mist, I fan with the lid for 30s. Seems like things are looking more blue than a couple of hours ago. I dunno, to me it looks as though the mycelium overgrowth is no allowing moisture to fall properly on the cake. Shall I cut it off? Here are some pics taken right now:

I had some of that overgrowth before on my first cakes. Didn’t cause any trouble for me. In fact shrooms grew from those spots.

Your lid looks cracked enough. Not sure why the blueing is getting worse. Looks like you have a nice glisten on your surface already. May be because those spots are not covered in vermiculite so they are more prone to bruising.

I'm using Mateah's HC tek too and it took me a bit to dial in the correct humidity. I'm using wicking cloth for an evaporative surface instead of coir. What I noticed in your tub pic above is that the sides are very clear. Are you getting any condensation on the inside walls of the tub? I just got the humidity to a point where I was getting a bit of condensation on the walls and the cakes started looking moist. Had to mist 2x/day the first couple of days. Now it seems to be holding itself steady. Just started pinning so I should know more in the next couple days. My first pins look pretty much like yours though. The only thing I've seen around the forum is that fanning is not recommended. Just opening the lid is enough.

Thanks for the reply guys, I'll post an update tomorrow morning. The glisten is mostly seen on the overgrowth, the cake themselves don't really have much moisture on the cake surface if it makes sense. The condensation on the walls is leaving, the first 4-5 days there was much more condensation. I'm getting scared to mist now from people saying its drenched? Doesn't seem like that to me tho..

The OP’s blocks are very bacterial and in stale conditions. Need more FAE. Pseudomonas is already setting up shop, there is much necrosis in progress.

Thanks for the info Pastywhyte! I just googled what Pseudomonas are, had no clue. Should I angle the lid more so that it is more open in the corners? Any tips to increase fae with the humidity chamber tek? Its currently 0C (32F) outside, leaving the window open is gonna freeze the room really fast. It's my first grow I want to salvage/optimise whatever I can!

Maybe try keeping the lid open for a good solid while, 3-6 hours in a open area. I’m afraid once things start getting to bacterial it can be hard to reverse. I recommend keeping a eye on them and ease up on the misting until you’ve given them time to recover.

Look out for anything suspect like different colors (green/pink). Next step after bacteria is usually mold. You will probably still be able to get a good solid flush out of those, if not two.

Listen to what Pastywhyte says for sure though. He knows more than most.

:goodluck:

Yeah of course, I've read maany of his posts & stickies. Legend. My heart dropped when he said things are looking bad, but hey, its a learning experience. I just checked on them now, I left the lid more open over night and things I think are looking better. I'll post some pics in the next hour or so.

Pics update. Its obvious the cake on the left is doing way better than the right one. Here are some pics taken now:

Here are some pics of the bruise/contam area with and without flash. Looks much worse with flash on

Looks like you’re on the right track. The left one looks good to me, a lot healthier. Keep a eye on that right one though, and if it gets much worse you may want to separate them. Other than that the pins look like they’ve been growing so that’s a good sign.

Thanks man, the pins have been growing for the last week. I've read people get mature fruits 3-5 days from pins. It seems as though these have at least 5 days more going at this rate. Is it ok for pins to take like 2 weeks to fully mature or will it rot being left growing for so long?

Re: Pins too dry? [Re: Shr00merN00ber]
    #25726554 -

The pins may have been stunted due to over-saturation of your blocks. If they don’t develope any faster In the next couple days of letting them have more FAE I’d be worried. May have some aborts on your hands.

I’ve noticed when I made the mistake of giving to much water caps would open prematurely and pins would abort. I have been able to recover some in the past by easing up on the misting, and giving them more FAE as you’re doing now.

Keep us posted on the progress of the growth to get a better idea. They do seem like they are taking longer to mature than most.

Just put the right one in a separate tub. I saw some yellow liquid forming on top of the mycelium on the overgrowth parts. I dabbed it with some paper at first, took a smell and that was it. Closest thing I can describe is like fermenting period juice mixed with mushroom.. YUK! I am paranoid now that shit will be inside my lungs, I feel like I'm smelling it all the time, prob in my head.. When lifting the cake I inspected it and smelt it from the under side, smelt fine. Hope I don't get any infection or bacteria from that stuff.. pew

Re: Pins too dry? [Re: Shr00merN00ber]

The yellow liquid you’re describing is most likely mycelium metabolites, (aka myc piss). It’s the myceliums defence against bacteria. Kinda like our white blood cells. It often shows up when the mycelium is stressed, or in your case bacterial. As long as it’s not turning green yet you should be in the clear. Just keep a eye on them.

Bacteria and myc piss definitely doesn’t smell pleasant... Post some pics tomorrow sometime of your pin development.

Nice to see the pins grew quite a bit overnight. Here is how they look this morning:

I can see fuzzy feet with some, suggests more fae if I'm not mistaken.

The thing I have no clue about is some shrooms are getting indent stems. They are kind of caving into themselves and making a gap, like here:

Anyone know what this is? Genetics? Too low water content? Thanks!

EDIT: Also this stem splitting?

Sometimes you may get some oddballs. I wouldn’t worry about it if it’s just a couple shrooms showing those signs. They should still mature. I’m guessing that one split from to much water, but I’m not 100%. Could also be verticillium.

Your pins and blocks are looking much healthier now though  glad they are growing more for you.

Did you get another picture of that block that wasn’t doing as hot? Or is that just the healthier looking one?

Hey MadHatter, really appreciate the attention! Thanks. This is the one cake that was doing better. I've given up on the other one in the state it was in. I've got in dunked in water right now and pasturizing coir + verm. I'm gonna shred it and do it in a shoebox 1:1 ratio. I don't expect much but hope something comes out of it. Do you think I should cover it up and wait for full colonisation? I'm seeing most people put them in fruiting conditions at birth.

That’s not a good idea if your block was already contaminated. It’s already lost a lot of energy and nutrients fighting off the bacteria. You probably won’t even get full colonization of your substrate before it contams out on you causing more of a headache.

I’d personally just scrap that one at this point and use your sub for something more fresh. Do you have anything else in the works right now?

It's done! I already did it before reading. Tbh I won't feel bad if it is contam, just a trial to making a bulk sub more than anything. If it works out and I get something, thats a +. If not, I'm not gonna get pissed over it. I'll post some pics in an hour or so.
