People who have tripped a lot; do the effects lessen when you are a psychedelic veteran?
    #25721238 -

When I first started smoking weed, I discovered a whole new world. After about a year I became much more used to the effects and it wasn’t as special, even when I lowered my tolerance.

Are psychedelics such as LSD and shrooms the same way? If you are going to do your 500th LSD trip, will it feel anything like your 50th, 15th or 5th trip? Or will you be so used to it that it barely feels like you are on a psychedelic.

I have heard a long time Ayuahasca user say that after hundreds upon hundreds of trips that the plant barely works on them anymore, is this the same with L and Shrooms or does it depend on the person? I appreciate hearing from you guys! I’ve never met somebody who has done more than 50 trips so it would be cool to find some true psychedelic veterans.

no not at all.  The mental effects do lessen while you are in the act of being a veteran!  If you take the same psychedelic in big doses, multiple times a month, you get used to the headspace.  I used to go ham, I've went though periods of my life where I tripped as much as possible with tolerances on all kinds of substances.  I've went real hard on dosage too.  I've also taken a few years break, the longest break since I started, somewhat recently.  My ass went to the moon when I came back and dropped a huge dose..

Different people may feel differently.  Some vets have even told me before it affects them more because they're older.  I just think that they fell off and got old.  I used to drive on ten strips and drug mixtures as a teen super confident.  I never wrecked or was pulled over under the influence..  I hopped in the car once when I got older and tried to go around the block after coming down off of 6 hits, and came right back!  It was terrifying!  So I guess some things do change as an adult but the psychedelics are just as strong.

ditto.

It's usually extremely rare and mystical when I feel the visuals and effects are stronger low dose.  Butt it's not rare at all that a low dose trip may be way stronger for me randomly MENTALLY

You mean does the novelty wear off? Sure.

When I take shrooms now I know what being on shrooms is like generally, even if individual trips vary.

I smoke weed every day and have a tolerance through the roof. If I let my tolerance go down and smoked again I'm sure it would be very enjoyable but I will never be able to smoke weed again without knowing what weed feels like to begin with.

While the novelty wears off I in no way liken my experience with shrooms to my experience with weed. Weed is like having a beer after work. Shrooms is like taking a 3 week vacation. Sure the novelty of feeling like I'm on vacation might be gone, but the experience of being on vacation is always different and always changes.

So, yes and no. Mostly no, IME

:ilold:  No, definitely not that.  That would really suck.

With enough trips (try 1000+) some doors close but others open.  :sagetrip:

The deeper you go the more room there is to go deeper yet, IME. Which is what keeps it interesting.

I agree partly with primal soup. I have been tripping for 4 decades and still get the same apprehension before I do anything. I have never taken more than 3 hits of strong LSD (once), and never more than 5g of mushrooms (twice). I don't want it to turn bad on me, and I take every trip very seriously. I used to plan my L trips on full moons and mushrooms too. I take breaks for years sometimes, but it finds me again eventually. The hardest I tripped was and oral dose of MHRB and Syrian rue back in 2005-06. I've been wanting to do it again now that I have a house to rip and be really comfy in, and the right people around. It was a solo trip for me as well. I have been solo tripping mostly the last 25-30 years. I think that the people that get used to it or bored have burned out by tripping way too much and too many high doses IMHO. Weed is still always special to me, but then again I am not nor was I ever a heavy every day smoker. As soon as I feel the medicine work I put it down.

I am by no means an old timer with psychedelics but I kinda wanted to chime in anyway.  I have tripped every 2-4 weeks just for the past year, as well as had ~10 trips back like 2010-2012, and have noticed a difference but the peculiar thing for me is that the strangeness of my trips hasn't lessened but rather my understanding of what the trips do to me and my psyche has become more confusing and less clear.

I guess what I am trying to say is that when I first started tripping my understanding of the psychedelic experience was shrouded in mysticism and wonder but since getting back seriously into tripping a year ago I have found that the trips feel less mystic and are more of a cathartic release and give me an emotional challenge that can leave me feeling quite fulfilled by the end of it.  This is nice but part of me misses the mysticism behind psychedelics but my perspective on life has changed significantly since I first tried them and I feel like this also has shaped the direction my current trips go.

At the end of the day, though, I understand that it would be silly for me to believe I have it figured out and I know that there will always be surprises waiting for me on the next trip.  This keeps me comin back.

Edit:

That sounds like some valuable advice.. I feel like it could be beneficial to switch things up a little with my psychedelic habits and see what happens.

after tripping over 50 years, I would say I am no longer a complete virgin. (for whom sex with a human being is astonishingly great) - Occasionally the mind goes to completely new places, but also appreciation of the ordinary is a spectacular result, tonic, refreshment, holiday, and home away from home.

my expectations from psychedelic intoxicants have softened, and usually (2/3 of the times) I am pleased with the results, especially some lysergic in the afternoon followed by a small amount of smoked cannabis at night, or maybe just edible thc in the afternoon. the last few years has included at least something like this every second or third day. (less OEV/CEV without cannabis)

some (1/3) of my paper is weak, I still do not have a good way of telling in advance if a tab is properly doped. (occasionally 1/4 of a tab is amazing, and sometimes a full one is less than 1/8th - I guess the 'manufacturers' get stoned and sloppy - and we get no guarantees.)

I agree with this too. The mysticism and magic has gone away and I see these drugs as as tool to alter perspective and perception of reality and whatever I take from that is what I take from it. Ultimately I am in control of my mind, I may not control the trip, but I am in control of how I receive and react to the trip.

I've been tripping for a dozen or so years so not really a veteran, I do find that I've become more sensitive to psychedelics over time though. If you dose too often then it can lose the magic, like anything done repeatedly the novelty of the experience wanes.

Sometimes certain psychedelics can alter how others affect you, for example after vaping N,N-DMT I found that mushrooms became somewhat similar. Also after a strong LSD experience I feel more sensitive to all psychedelics, where it takes less to pass the threshold of being immersed in the experience.

I've experienced something similar, one solution to avoid uneven blotter is to put a batch of tabs into vodka and then dose volumetrically which works very well.

For me, it depends on the substance. I started tripping just under 30 years ago, mostly on shrooms, and I've been taking ayahuasca for 15 years.

I used to get much more OEVs from mushrooms than I do now, I hardly get them anymore (except recently when my buddy's face started morphing in quite an extreme fashion). I've never had much CEVs, I'm not much of a visual person. But nowadays my trips tend to get (besides more frequent) much deeper and mystical, and I get much more out of them. They keep me happy, positive and confident.

Ayahuasca is another story. I turned to the vine when I realized I had some kind of block with mushrooms: the more I took, the lesser the effect. I needed guidance, so I took ayahuasca with shamans. This took me on a very long process of inner work that made me gradually discover everything that was wrong with my family, and believe me, it was a lot. But after some years, toward the end of that process, it seemed that I gradually lost my connection with ayahuasca, an that in some ways it pushed me back to mushrooms. Quite recently I've 'acknowledged the message' and realized that shrooms truly are my medicine, but I needed the detour via ayahuasca to work through my personal shit. I still take ayahuasca occasionally for the purge though, and I attend the second night, but I take mushrooms instead.

I'm less experienced with acid, although it was my first psychedelic. But I've always liked it and still do, and I've noticed no change in effect with that one.

made a little sketch while i was still tripping, it was almost impossible to remember anything because it kept morphing so quickly and it was very complex.
I feel like the direction of change is coming towards me like things look different from far away but once they move closer little nooks and crannys will turn into entities.
i get the impression im looking at stars mixed with geometry with a "jackinthebox" aesthetic??

Some psychedelics do 'synergize', creating some kind of rising spiral... Like, after I first took DMT, even weed became intensely psychedelic and visual for a while.

That said, yes, tripping often takes some of the magic away. To regain it, it's not enough to 'lower the tolerance', but rather to completely abstain for multiple months, or even a year. You need to re-experience the drug with a fresh mind to get a fresh effect.

IME the "fresh" experience is overrated, it stems from having to unpack the unexamined ego mind.  It's not magic, it's just not being used to the expanded consciousness through constant exposure to societal norms that forces thought back into the ordinary realms.

What I've found far more interesting (and productive) is blowing past those phases into the heart of the experience.  This IME comes after the few trips that have that whole gee whiz aspect to them and continuing on.  But not a lot of people ever do this kind of thing it seems.

It's not the same experience, it can be a much more pervasive one, and one in which you can take a lot more back with you when you leave it, if you approach it with an open mind.  :yinyang2:

mental contents at the time also contribute to the visual side in theme, texture, character, or characters.

so tripping is also about living, because how you live becomes the body and soul of your mental contents:

Probably has something to do with entangling the same brain states, I know that playing certain kinds of microtonal music evokes psychedelic states even when completely sober.

What kind of meditation? There are huge differences between different techniques, not only in their effect, but in their aims and purposes too.

Tantric breathwork -Tummo, Kriya, etc.- (and Western derivatives such as the Wim Hof method) is ridiculously powerful. It's not the same immediate gratification as dropping psychedelics, but is in fact so 'heavy' that I have talked to several people who decided to stop practice because it was too much for them.

Shamanic dreaming, as described by Harner, requires a certain level of proficiency at walking the tightrope between sleep and wakefulness, and might take a month or more of active practice before the first visions, but once attained and practiced, is an extremely intense visionary tool.

There are other forms of meditation that while very beneficial, and will contribute to psychological wellbeing, simply isn't meant as a visionary tool, and so won't result in visions at all - or if it does, then it's only by chance. For example I tend to get hallucinatory 'soundbites' when practicing emptying my mind - but in this practice, the aim is to let all such experiences float by. They are not the goal, only a distraction.

i dunno. that's like asking "what KIND of exercise"? the answer is really "whatever you want, they're all beneficial in different ways".

though generally when i think meditation i think mindfulness meditation. it's easy (haha, ok, so maybe easy isn't the best word for any kind of meditation to the beginner) and kind of like the aerobic exercise of the brain - can be done anywhere with a little improvisation, great for general wellness, and a good springboard for other, heavier types of meditation.

The question was, can meditation result in similar visions as psychedelics. It begs the question, what kind of meditation. Some can, some cannot.

Yes, "what kind of exercise" is a good question to ask, when for example someone inquires about how good exercising is for one's joints... Gymnastics tends to be better than weightlifting.

Other way around. I need less to get the same effect now.

Well, you know it when you see it.  Just like psychedelic music, it's obvious...

Probably has something to do with entangling the same brain states, I know that playing certain kinds of microtonal music evokes psychedelic states even when completely sober.

that's the attraction of living in between the frames (of perception). Atonality is between the notes.
the frames are the expectations, bits and pieces of experience that when present suffice to enable your next habituated action. So if you expand your mind to pick up what is in between, you wake up to a different reality - one that was already here anyway.

ive never spent a lot of time meditating. im always afraid im going to waste time cuz i have time anxiety and the only thing that fixes it is working on something productive.
but ive never experienced much beyond weak hypnagogia

keep trying to get back to it,
be open to all your mental contents - some sensory - some perceptive - and practice being calm in the face of them for a period of time each day, this will make you more productive in everything.

@SleepyE

There is an invention by a good friend of Dennis McKenna called the Ajna Light that is rumored to produce DMT in the brain and stimulate the Pineal gland.

Yeah, that's an important point, but not too relevant to "did you have visuals".  :awesomenod:

Good way to look at it.  One can also call it thinking sideways and slipping through the barriers erected by the ordinary mind.

I've been tripping on and off for 25 years. So many highs and lows over the years.

There's still the depth and the amazement like at the start, but I know the paths better now. I get more prophetic visions rather than just pure chaos. I can look into the void without fear, but the messages that come back are often really direct and insistent now, very hard to ignore. Sometimes I have to stop for years, other times I can't get enough and will trip weekly.

Still nice to come one here though... shoot the shit with all the old heads and new heads alike.
