It's smelling ok. I'm definitely getting occasional wafts of shroom in the place. It kinda just smells earthy.

Overmisting a bit

Actually yes! I read a thread that suggested light misting while pins were setting but today I decided it was getting too moist so I am going to stop.

That's the difficult thing about forums, people want to contribute something unique so they come up with a new twist or angle that can throw you off track. Innovation and fine tuning are necessary but it can create alot of bs that you have to wade through until you find what works.

I think Occam's razor and kiss are the best guidelines. Sticking to the basics and not over-thinking will provide the best results. Molds and fungi have been doing their thing here for billions of years so giving them the basics of what they need and getting out of the way is probably  best.

After listening to alot of McKenna lectures I've come to the conclusion that we're just taxi cabs for spores. They and bacteria are the ones really running the show on this planet. lol

I've been caught on for a couple years: we're bioengineered data collection, and transport devices... designed by the over-consciousness to carry out any given set of possibility... essentially just one of infinite playing outs of "what if"

I'm an appointed ambassador to the mush: my duty? To help spread them far and wide... I think mushrooms are biological space probes... they release spores into space via panspermia  (absolute zero in the vacuum of space are perfect storage conditions for spores to last millions, even billions of years perhaps)... after floating through space for however long, the spores percolate into the atmosphere of a planet containing the necessary elements (i believe there are many sets of conditions; not just water/oxygen) for life... they then germinate, grow, fruit, and are consumed: at which point you are given information from other realities and timespaces while sending back information on biological conditions of the planet and it's inhabitants, intelligence levels, and other details that may be relevant to intergalactic/interspacial travel (ie rate of time, gravitational forces present etc)... I'm Looney though, and probably trio too much

Yeah I dig the panspermia hypothesis. Terrence was definitely into it while his brother Dennis, being the down to earth scientist he is, believes shrooms are terrestrial. I like your idea of cosmic databases jump starting higher consciousness on new worlds.  It's a smart way to spread cosmic consciousness in a self replicating medium that propagates itself around a planet and then pops up and says, "Eat Me!" lol

I see life as a dream. We are a singular awareness dreaming it is separate beings. It is definitely playing out infinite possibilities. It is so far beyond comprehension it continually blows my mind. I have meditated on the question, "How is it anything exists at all?" As I ascend into it I experience a bizarre vibration and pop back into my body. I guess I'm not ready to go there yet. Maybe the shrooms can help me with that?

Trip too much? I used to think the same thing, but then I think, maybe I haven't tripped enough? lol

I'm just being facetious: I believe to be closer to reality than most ... mushrooms will certainly help understanding the bizarre much better lol

For anyone who has a similar issue and finds this thread, I ended up getting 70 dried grams out of this tub.

Most of the fruits were 2 1/2 - 2 3/4" tall and 5 - 8 grams fresh:  Midget Mushies?

I had some larger fruits come up once the main flush was harvested that got up to 3 3/4" and 20 grams fresh.  I didn't bother dunking for subsequent flushes.

Overall I'm pleased with the production considering I also started with two bacterial spawn jars: Rye grain jars sweet citrus smell

If you are experiencing similar issues it may be worth it to salvage what you have and see what comes out of it. Stay on top of air exchange and moisture levels. Mycelium is tough stuff. Give it a chance and it may surprise and reward you.

Is mildew smell kind of between ammoniacy and bleachy ? I ask because it is what I got just after spawn in a coir/verm substrate, although the spawn looked really clean.

Is it the coir smell? Smell some plain coir... typically, any smell other than fresh mushrooms is a bad thing

20g dry from your first flush? How many qts of spawn went into this? I'm glad it wasn't a total fail and that you got some fruits, but your low yield is a sign of contaminates

People get 28g from one qt of spawn, at a 1:1 ratio in shoeboxes, easly

If you work on getting clean spawn, you can have much better results

His post says 70 g dry & that he had some larger 2nd flush fruits that weighed 20 g wet.

My bad your right.

But still if the mono had 5qts of spawn, first flush dry should be 140g dry. 70g from 3 flushes, so half as good as his potential.

I put 3 quarts of spawn into that tub and got just over 70 grams dried. From your estimate that sounds average.  I've got a dozen jars going now that I'm expecting better results from.

How to describe the smell of mildew? Take a rag, wet it with warm water, squeeze it out, ball it up and throw it in a corner for a week. Then give it a good whiff. Thats mildew.

I'd say it's astringent and pungent and kinda sour. Like Caps said if your substrate doesn't smell earthy and mushroomy something else is probably living in there.

Like I said above give it good air exchange and it might recover.
