Questions about Amanita muscaria var. flavivolvata
    #25720040 -

Hi all, been lurking on the forums here for a while and my wife and I came across some Amanita muscaria recently in the Santa Cruz mountains, California. You might have guessed already that we picked them... so here I am.

I'm specifically curious as to the subspecies flavivolvata and the effects of ingesting said mushroom, does anyone have any experience with the USA (California) version of Amanita muscaria?

Various threads on erowid and around the web suggest that the effects of these California subspecies are the same or similar as the siberian/european variety. However, a source on this forum here on the shroomery in "Preparation of Amanita muscaria" specifically states...

"Taxonomy is very important so pay attention.  Amanita muscaria does not occur in the USA except for the yellow form that grows in the PNW. In the USA we get Amanita muscaria var. flavivolvata in most of the country, and Amanita muscaria var. persicina in the southeast.  Amanita muscaria occurs in Europe and Alaska."

...but doesn't expand on this. In fact, other than a website which says "This subspecies apparently contains the same toxins as Amanita muscaria subsp. muscaria of Europe, northern Asia, and far northwestern North America" I've found very little about var. flavivolvata as compared to Amanita muscaria var muscaria, especially in relation to their effects.

Like I said, there are a number of local accounts suggesting that these are safe if prepared properly, and will give you a trip, but they've still always simply been referred to as Amanita muscaria, not var. flavivolvata. Perhaps this belongs in the hunting category, although I'm certain this is Amanita muscaria (likely var. flavivolvata) as it was found around some spruce trees in one instance, and eucalyptus in another, and it's a pretty unmistakable one. I've included a couple photos.

I've dried them out in the oven at about 175F overnight with the door open, they're like a cracker now. I also sauteed half of one in butter and salt and froze, since I heard they actually taste good in food. The rest are dried out and currently in a ziplock bag in a pouch under our bed, probably about 2 pounds worth before drying. Been a few days, now...

What do you guys recon is a good way to get started with these? Read about teas, powdering, etc and it's worth mentioning I have no experience with psilocybins. I'm obviously not opposed, but the opportunity never presented itself. These sort of came to me, so to speak, and I plan on enjoying them but figured I'd post here first for some feedback and, hopefully, more concrete info.

Happy new year!

The effects of the amanita that grow on the West coast of the USA are different from the European ones in my experiences. The European ones are more stimulating and have a less "heavy" effect, they can be a bit easier to handle. I could take higher doses of the European ones but the American ones are good also. Quite strong.

The proper way to use these is to start with low doses and gradually work your way up. You can take a few bites off a cap, wait a few hours and then have another few bites until you reach the desired effect. They give you energy in low doses and have a painkilling effect. In high doses they can be extremely psychedelic and produce NDE type experiences.

Ive been doing tons of reading on the amanitas of late and (from my reading) I would not ingest them unless dried first. Drying supposedly gets rid of the toxins... not sure about cooking tho…  Just my 2 cents, Ive never tried them but methinks if I ran across them I would be tempted. I have seen them in the NC mountains.
