Potency loss versus qualitative change in active constituents when drying
    #25719058 -

Here's the deal fam:

I basically can't trip off of dried shrooms.  In my most epic attempt, I had a mild level 2 at best off of 8 grams dried p cubensis...whereas I flirted with level 4 off of 45 grams taken fresh.

This is by no means a fluke.  When I take this amount or more of good fresh cubes, I have a good solid trip.  I have never once had a good trip from dried mushrooms, after lots of attempts.

This presents a problem.  If I want a good trip, I have to have a lucky hunt (i.e., 40+ grams fresh) and take them that day.  My typical hunt lately ranges from the mid single digits to 20something grams.  So I have to dry these out and store them to build up enough to trip.

Now, I haven't been drying them properly.  I've just set them on top of my desk in a room with a ceiling fan at a low speed, and they dry out in a day or three, then Ive been storing them in a plastic bag with no desiccant.  They never really get "cracker" dry...there's always a little bit of give/bendiness in the mushrooms.

No longer.

I recently came across a proper food dehydrator and a large supply of desiccant and some mason jars.

My last few hunts since using the dehydrator have been typical, now I am drying them for several hours in the dehydrator at 120F and placing them into mason jars alongside some paper desiccant packets.  This has resulted in 2 grams "properly" dried mushrooms.  They are brittle, and very very dry.  Definitely different from what I've been keeping.

Today I had a decent above average hunt (27 grams fresh!) which has now been dehydrated and my scale now tells me I have 5.5 grams of cracker-dry and brittle, brittle properly stored psilocybe cubensis mushrooms.  At my next opportunity I'm going to take these and report here.  I am hopeful that I won't be let down.

In addition to being weaker (quantitatively) there does also seem to be a qualitative difference in the psychedelic experience from my old doses of dried shrooms versus fresh.  If I were to take however much of this dried stuff was necessary to equal my last 45 grams fresh trip in subjective psychedelic intensity, I am nearly positive that the result would undoubtedly be a trip of significantly differing character.  I have read that the ratio of psilocybin to psilocin changes when mushrooms dry and I am going to surmise that this is responsible for the difference.

I'll report back in this thread about that too!  For science

I always noticed a difference in the trip between shrooms that were cultivated and dried verses field picked and boiled shrooms. Shrooms that are field picked and boiled tend to have a wilder and more fun trip. I never knew if the difference was the way the shrooms were grown or the way they are prepared. I’m sure that differences in dosing also plays a factor.

I run my dehydrator at 165 some people go 180+ just a helpful tip.
And not drying correct makes for an inaccurate scaling of the mush and it's possible contents, not to mention the oxidation of the psilo.

When you say boiled, you mean you've boiled fresh mushrooms and eaten said boiled mushrooms?  Or do you mean boiling water and making a tea?

I only ask because I've never heard of boiling and eating fresh (psychedelic) mushrooms.

There shouldn't be that much potency loss from dried vs fresh. It's all a matter of which piles are producing bomb or bunk boomers.

i haven't noticed any difference in tripping myself from fresh vs equivalent dried. then again all my trips don't get past low level 2 so there's less variation for them possible in the first place.

I'm thinking it's the previous drying procedure that is the main flaw

Yeah the drying seemed like a major factor. But I've noticed a difference between fresh and dried.

Fresh is best, but dried with care is second best.  I make tea from fresh and store that, keeps for years (at least) and it works.

120F is going to take forever 12+ hours not a couple hours.

Another thing you have to account that's a possibility idk if it's true or not but I know when a cannabis bud is drying if it doesnt have constant air movement then the moisture still contained within starts to decay the plant material. This classic smell is the "green" home grown smell which evaporates terpenes and degrades the buds potency.

Homegrown isnt just green smelling weed, its improperly dried weed. Now idk if actives evaporate like terpenes but I assume they are similar and fragile molecules so keeping a mushroom that still has moisture is more than likely decaying and breaking down which would most likely degrade potency. Someone smarter may call me an idiot but I think this may be why your potency is way off with dried mushrooms. Getting a proper drying method down was smart of you sir.

I do know wild can be less potent in general compared to home grown mushrooms.

All right fam it’s time.

I just lemon tekked 5 grams of this properly dried p cubensis.

It was so dry and brittle I was able to pulverize it into powder just by crushing it in my fist.  Then I dropped the powder into about 2 fl oz of lemon juice and let it sit for 15 minutes or so, then I ate/drank it over the course of about 15 minutes.  As always getting it down was mortifying.

I’m really excited to see if this really is as good as fresh.

I run through the forum and find another tek. Rectal shrooming. You may go way higher with less shrooms, and you'll bypass nausea and other stomach related issues. Don't use whole mushroom bodies cause caps probably won't fit, unless it's PE.

Well the verdict is in.

Definitely not as good as 50 grams fresh.

But way better than my old dried stuff.

I don’t know if I’m just naturally really resistant to psilocybin or if my field just produces weak mushrooms, but 5 grams of definitely cracker dried and properly stored cubes only took me to what I’d call a level 2.  And I hadn’t tripped in like 6 weeks so I know it’s not acUte tolerance.

I have some b+ spores that kick ass. I dried mine for about 23hrs the first time and I was worried that I had over done it. they were bone dry. So probably 12-16 hrs would have done it. But honestly they were some of the strongest shrooms I've had. If I did lose a significant amount of akaloids to over exposure I didn't notice.

But the fact of eating 100g fresh to 10g dry is significant. The fresh trip seems like a slow burn to me. Tea, I assume would be the easiest way to consume such a quantity and have it back an initial punch.

Drying correctly there's little loss.  I like the taste of the tea made from fresh better though.  There's no difference in the amount of tea (about 100 cc for 100 g fresh, or a little less...

Same batch/tub (different flushes and this has been the norm)
1 10g fresh cube kicks arse over 2 dried and is a way better trip then 5g dried.

I have the 1000w ezidri that i crank up to full 70c.

I don't know where or how high I have been, and I only re-started this journey 6-8 months ago (my foot has been on the peddle and I feel 'good'.

I went 'dried' 2g a few times then 5g then 6g then a few 10g and a 15g with oj that was 'beautiful' and equally nasty but damn I feel empowered after..... anyway.

1-3 g of fresh gets me so much more pumped up.

I  Trip solo and micro dose also so............? I just really feel I'm cooking em for to long at to high or, fresh is best for me.

....... funny thing is I have given a few g's to a couple of true friends I feelt could benefit from this med, and seeing them taking 0.03g to 0.2 every other day makes me think either I have to back off, I'm a natural tripper, or my head ain't wired like most all haha.

It really is a beautiful tonic

Much luv.

I didn't read all replies but idk why your new method od drying wouldn't give good results.

Try a tea with the dried. Maybe 3-4g to try.

I don't get why dry shrooms aren't as good to you.

Try fasting ?

shit mate, I don't know either?

Tea with dried, ok, it's an idea but there dry, so whatever i gobble down dry, is, dry ??
Fasting, my diet is solid but, yes, maybe... I just don't understand.

I feel like it's been cut in half and the trip filtered with mmmmmmm not so much light haha It's always a trip but. These fresh ones really got me thinking, whats up going on here... When most say there is no/not much difference dry/not dried.

Happy all the same.

................ I had 9 fresh in the paddock and moved the cows with my mind from 500m away lol, I know, but it happened ha, chance, yeah maybe, but it was freak'n awesome.

That's really interesting.

One guess is you're far more experienced eith fresh. Could setting matter? Same setting dry vs fresh? Out in the fields ?

But if you have tripped a lot fresh, high doses, maybe you pick up on the difference more than most of us who have tripped far more times dry vs fresh?

Just a thought

Test is stronger than eating dry. So worth a try.

I've eaten fresh only maybe 3-5 times out of a large number of trips. Hard to say how many. But quite a few.

I never really noticed fresh were much different but like I mentioned, I'm thinking maybe it's the relationship you've built with fresh vs dry

Just a thought

Or setting. Maybe there's something to being out in the fields eating them fresh like that

Sounds pretty magical

As far as I know psilocin is more prone to degradation than psilocybin. Fresh shrooms contain both, psilocin and psilocybin.

While drying, the psilocin partially degrades. Not all of it, but some. Psilocin is 1.5 times more potent by wheight than psilocybin.
Now if only little of the psilocin degrades it could make a noticable difference in the overall potency of the shrooms, compared dried to fresh.

Fresh seems to be stonger, and richer in it's effects, compared to dried shrooms. With psilocin -rich species, like pan cyans, it is even more noticable. Fresh pans really kick ass.

That's my theory behind. Just my opinion. :strokebeard:

yesterday I tried my first tea yewwww, not so exciting actually...
Black tea bag + ginger bag boiled.
added 3g of dried shrooms, after I took the bags out and boiled for another 10 min.
Added lemon, honey and sugar. Tasted great.
... I tossed the gunk/muck away.
It came on very quick.

The whole trip was 'anguish' no visuals, no energy, no happy feelings in the back end... I still found it enjoyable looking back on it but I think i'm addicted to anguish ha,
oh well......

trying to work out why and what went on.
I'm really looking forward to trying same tea but with fresh.

Have a great day, thanks for listening. Cheers
