Evolution of the SAB * 5

Hey shroomers,

The still air box is a must have in mycology.
Ok.. a flowhood is most of the time the better choice, but if you want it cheap and easy or you just start out with this hobby you can't do without a SAB.

Since the SAB is a useful tool for many years I'm curious about how it evolved over years.
At first the glove box was a thing but that evolved in a simpler and better version like the SAB.

My idea is that we all show our SABoxes to see the creative solutions we've got for it. We share and learn from each other so we all benefit from it and we let the good old cheap SAB evolve :wink:


In my case I hated the poor visibility and the armholes that prevent movements.
So I came up with a glass plate (window) for perfect visibility at what I'm doing.
I had seen pics from SAB's for students at a university and that they use an open front side of the upside down tub. So I thought it's not a problem to use a more open design so that my movement improves.

This is my SAB (145L), excellent visibility and practical with the wide armslot for optimal movement.
Most important; it works like a charm :smile:


Show me (and all the others from beginner to advanced) how your SAB looks like and what ideas you came up with to make it better, prettier or more practical!

Share ideas to learn from eachother :wink:

I'm curious how long you've been using this dragon and if you've encountered any problems with it. Love the open arm concept since I tend to get jammed up in confined spaces.

I've used it now for more than half a year. I haven't got any contams yet. I think the contam rate is the same as a traditional SAB with the 2 armholes (I used before).

Can't wait Geinstein!! I would love to see your version of the SAB. Btw are you also from the EU? Your name sounds almost as if it's in my language :wink:


And when my SAB is not in use (or in this case with making a few prints) I put some saran wrap over the slot to keep the inside as clean as possible.

The flaps would be worse. They're in the way and move air. Less protection

Like how ya got the clear plexi glass on there.

I converted a part of my shelf into a SAB.

I like it nice and roomy with a clear view.
Been working out pretty nice. Loads from the side with a sliding panel.
Then I have a curtain that closes over the front when not in use.
It is nice being able to sit in my chair and just chill n work. I use my old 64q steralite one for prints if the cat isn't making a home in it. :shakecat:

@vertygo, go for it and try my design with glass and an armslot. Cheap and easy to make!
And like bodhisatta said, I wouldn't recommend flaps. The whole principle is Still Air, so when the flaps move all the contams go airborne again..

@bodhisatta, cool to meet you in my thread! All the info to get me started in this hobby comes from you. I really appreciate it that you share your experience and knowledge with us all :smile:

@R.I.P.Zappa, I used regular glass, not plexiglass. Just because the glass only cost me a few bucks/euro's..
I really like your design! Plenty of space in there and perfect visibility. Clever to use a shelf, I like that idea.
And when the work is done you close the curtains :wink:

I was already thinking of modifying my SAB before I saw this because Iโ€™m having trouble seeing what Iโ€™m doing when doing agar work. I was thinking that I should add a clear plastic or glass window, but wouldnโ€™t this add more nooks and crannies where contams could hide and it would be harder to clean? By the looks of this I could get away with just cutting a hole in the front, but am I right to assume that if I did that, then I would need to wear some sort of protective overalls and a medical mask, like in the photo? That wouldnโ€™t be a problem Iโ€™m sure, I can get a cheap Tyvek suit or something like that that will do the job from my local hardware store, and getting masks shouldnโ€™t be a problem, Iโ€™m just wondering if thatโ€™s the better thing to do rather than stick on a window?

@Duggstar, I don't have any trouble cleaning my SAB with glass window and armslot. The silicone I have used is finished very smooth so you can wipe it and there are no hidden corners for contams. I haven't found any trouble of that kind.

Why don't you give it a try and make a SAB with open front like the university pic. I would love to hear the results from you (in this thread, or your own). And if it doesn't work you buy some glass/plexiglass and you've got a working SAB again :wink:
We all can learn from each other if the ideas and/or experiments are shared.
I've never experimented with an open front SAB, so I don't know if the contam rate is low...

In my case I don't use the tyvek suit. I take a shower and put some clean clothes on. That's because of the dogs who live with me.
I always work with gloves and a mask and sometimes a hairnet. Then the disinfection procedures with ISO 70%, like my hands and gloves, arms, workingspace etc.
Most important is your sterile technique, after that comes the SAB or flowhood.

Sterile work is all about technique.
I do my work in the sterile air of a laminar flow hood now.
But when I started my first still air box was made of cardboard, saran wrap and duct tape. I used this box made of trash(it did require frequent re-taping) for more than a year, doing clean agar work and making spawn.

i too have used a cardboard box in a pinch. SAB is about still air not clean surfaces/sleeves.

Bod, do you still spray down your box as described in your SAB TEK? Or are you doing it dry now-a-days, like mushboy? Just curious. I'm still using water with a drop of soap.
