The rave will always be a part of me but I haven't been to one in ages. I get together with some friends occasionally and we turn out the lights and dance and play with LEDs and turn up the electronic music and honestly that's enough to keep me happy as much as I'd like to go to a bigger thing again someday.

Or what about field parties? When did people stop doing that shit? I haven't heard of that kind of thing in a dog's age. Fires everywhere, music thumping, tons of people getting fucked up. Rural raves aka field parties. Shit just feels non-existent these days. Grew up in mostly the same area(s) as my sister and with just a 6/7 year gap it was like night and day. Her generation was doing raves and field parties every week or two. Once I rolled into high school this shit only happened once at that spot, and I knew eeeeverybody so I would have at least known about it. Literally once. Everything else was all house parties. I think the cops cracked down because kids kept dying. Everything is different everywhere but where I am this stuff has calmed tf down over the last 20 years. I can't even remember the last time I rolled past a house clearly having a party that wasn't for kids or a meal. Sad times man.

I went to something pretty close to a real rave, the kind of rave I remember from the 90s, this past summer.  A friend of mine knows that I like Irish production duo Bicep and he told me they were gonna be playing a show in Philadelphia.  We agree to meet there, and itā€™s at a spot Iā€™d never heard of.  We get to the venue, and itā€™s this huge warehouse.  Kinda caught me off guard.  We go in, and thereā€™s no search at the door.  I go to shows semi regularly in Philly; Iā€™m always made to empty my pockets, get patted down, get wanded, walk through a metal detector, etc.  usually some combo of all of those.  So just walking in was crazy. 

Also, at every venue in Philly, once youā€™re in, youā€™re in.  You can go to a little smokersā€™ corral along the building, but you canā€™t leave the area and be allowed back in.  But at this party we had free rein to come and go as we pleased. 

Inside, thereā€™s some rudimentary furniture, a sorta functioning bathroom, and a dj booth upstairs and downstairs.  Free water and free beer in huge bins of ice.  The crowd is steadily coming in until the place was packed, all ages it seemed.  There were people in their early 20s to people in their 50s.  Insanely loud pulsing music, just big walls of speakers upstairs with the dj booth oriented right in the middle of the room.  It was only a table with speakers around it.  You were allowed to smoke cigarettes inside, which is something you havenā€™t been allowed to do in Philly since like 2005. 

There was security, but they didnā€™t give a fuck about anything and folks were openly using drugs wherever.  Weed, coke, k, it didnā€™t matter, just people getting high as fuck. My friend puked in the sink from taking E, which is something thatā€™ll get you thrown out of most philly venues, but no one cared. 

And the heat- it was insane.  Thatā€™s maybe what most made it feel like an old school party.  The warehouse was clearly not outfitted to deal with having so many dancing people in it, and the upstairs became just this wall of heat.  So hot that condensation started forming on everything.  The walls were sweating, there was a visible cloud line between the upstairs and downstairs, and the stairs were so slick with it that I saw some wasted dude fall down them.  He was fine.

And also, the vibe of the party was like the 90s.  It was just everyone dancing and smiling, lots of strangers talking, everyone having fun.  Like, I donā€™t know how to better word it, it just felt like the 90s.  Amazing atmosphere.  It was just a great night, and when Bicep played, there was a brief period where I was like unstuck in time.  Not in the 90s, but not in 2018, just existing there in what I remembered a real rave to feel like.  Iā€™m probably explaining this poorly.

I know this doesnā€™t do much to answer your second question, because no, Iā€™m not a part of this scene or culture any more, and the fact that I was even there was a total one off oddity; I donā€™t know if Iā€™ll ever find another party like it.  But to answer your first question, yeah, real parties, the underground kind that feel lawless and friendly and wild still do exist.  This event was like nothing Iā€™ve been to in ages.  Back in 2011 I djā€™ed at an underground rave that a friend threw at his house, and while it technically fit the criteria, it wasnā€™t the same as the parties I went to as a teenager.  It felt like a less structured DIY facsimile of the club nights and mainstream raves that the promoter was used to.  Whatever I went to in July 2018 felt authentic and old.  It was nuts, and I hope that any of you looking for a party like it can find it.

I went to a ton of parties between 1996-2001, so thereā€™s a lot of general stuff.  I can remember some of it crystal clear, and a lot of it is gone forever.  Is there anything specific you want to hear about?  If not, I can just mention some random stuff that I recall.  Let me know and Iā€™ll respond when I can (may not be until tonight- it could take a while to type and Iā€™m with my son right now).

In London; yes, yes and double yes.

I used to have a bunch of contacts in the [underground] scene but unfortunately they got lost with an old phone somewhere.

PLUR was definitely a thing, for a while. Mostly in the 90's and early 00's.

Like Burke, I've been to the occasional rave that felt just like being back there since, but they're few and far between.

Yeah man, it was a really friendly, warm scene for the most part.  I had my group of friends that Iā€™d hang out with every day, these were close friends.  Other people had their own circles of close friends, but within the general rave scene, most of us knew each other.  Weā€™d see each other at parties and for the most part, the little groups all got along as one larger community.  So going to a rave in your home area was like hanging out with a few hundred friends, plus whatever friendly outsiders. 

There would occasionally be some drama, but nothing major.  I remember going to a rave on my 18th birthday, and as I was talking to one of my best friends, some random dude ran up and punched him in the face and ran off, lol.  We were pretty confused by the situation, and went looking for the guy.  Upon finding him, after some shouting and shoving, we figured out the problem: the girl my friend had been dating for the past couple weeks (he thought they were exclusive) had been double-timing her boyfriend, the punch-runner, of like 2 years.  Cheating on him with my buddy.  My friend had no idea about the boyfriend, and once we got that ironed out, they both decided to ditch the girl, lol.  Minus her, I remember we all ended up at the same afterparty the next morning, and my friend and the boyfriend started hanging out occasionally.  So while there would be incidents like that, it was mostly all good.

And youā€™d make a lot of friends at parties.  You could accidentally bump into someone (happened all the time because of densely packed venues), and end up spending most of the night with them, friend groups intermingled.  If you had to wait in line for a while to get into the spot (not uncommon), youā€™d likely get to know everyone around you in line, and youā€™d possibly chill with them inside.  I remember once I was in line for a rave in Staten Island, and started talking to this one dude, he was pretty cool.  We had a while to chat and we hung out a bit in the party.  Then a couple weeks later I was at a rave in Philadelphia, and I randomly bumped into Staten Island Line Guy.  We were really excited to see each other and it was like a little reunion, haha.

But it wasnā€™t all flowers and PLUR.  Towards the end of the century a nastier element crept onto the scene, and by 1999 it was tough to go to a party without at least seeing members of BTS.  If youā€™re not reading the article, the short story is that BTS (Brooklyn Terror Squad, Born To Steal, whatever) was a loose gang of assorted stick up kids, beat down boys, bunk drug dealers, and general bad vibe bringers who clung to the edge of the scene.  So it wasnā€™t at all unheard of for folks to get robbed or attacked at parties (even though it wasnā€™t super common either).  I remember one smaller party I was at in 2000, at a house, it was the end of the night, the sun was just starting to come up.  I was outside chatting with friends, when I hear a bit of commotion behind me and my friend whoā€™s looking that way says, ā€œoh shit, he just grabbed his pillsā€.  I look down by the driveway, and see a few guys surrounding a well known dealer.  They start walking away from him at a brisk pace, and one of them flashes a gun on his waist while the other pulls a tire iron from inside his waistband.  What happened was they asked to buy pills, and when the dude pulled out what was left of his stash (it was morning and heā€™d sold like 90% of them), they just grabbed the E and fled.  It was pretty surprising to see someone go to that length of trouble for just a few pills, but I think they went for that instead of his cash because he wouldā€™ve struggled to keep the money.  I have a story of my own personal encounter with BTS, it actually coincides with one of the more acutely lucky moments of my life.  Maybe Iā€™ll tell it sometime.  But overwhelmingly these BTS incidents were a minuscule part of our whole rave experience.  There was some bullshit, especially towards the end, but mostly it was a real kind, friendly scene where anyone could have fun and be themselves with others looking to do the same.

That felt like a lot to tell at once, so Iā€™ll answer your second question simply: yeah, we did dance our asses off.

I was never in London but :whathesaid:. I loved it!!! All my social retardness seemed to disappear at raves. I talked to people, I danced like no one was watching (they weren't btw) I hugged random people and random people hugged me, it was fucking awesome.
There were the odd incidents regarding drugs, paranoia and fucked up people, but on the whole it was a great scene to be a part of.

i went to a rave in asheville, NC one new year's eve/morning.  we had packed up all the gear from a show my friends were playing (opening for Larry Keel And The Natural Bridge).  both the drivers wanted to go, so we all got roped into it.  it was at an art-collective in an abandoned warehouse where at least a few dozen people lived and made art...4 or 5 floors of all kinds of shitty dance/dub music.  me and one of the guys were not into it at all, so we ended up hanging out with some hobos around a burning trash-can while waiting for our taxi to take us back to the hotel.

I agree; underground means 'you have to know the right people to know of its existence' to me.

As with so much in life, it's about who you know, and I think it makes it that much more special.

Yeah, that's the bit that takes me back. I'd bump into friends I'd made at raves at different raves all over. Bonding moments with total strangers were hella frequent. Also the making friends with everyone in your vicinity in the queue, and the electrifying excitement that accompanied that first stage of the night, as the bassline steadily came more and more distinguishable to ones senses. Man it gives me butterflies to bring it to mind.

I saw some fucking gnarly things at underground raves/squat parties where security is non-existent, and have been involved in a few unpleasant instances, but all in all I always felt I was with a good crowd. There's always gonna be a few dishonest/disrespectful humans anywhere you go.

But that's the thing; I have never known a sense of 'togetherness' as I did in that scence. I imagine Woodstock et al had a similar kind of vibe.

Wouldn't know it now though. Young people these days seem to have no concept of making sure they don't intrude upon your dancing space. It kinda spoils things when you've got someone frequently bashing into you, no matter how hard you try and stay zen about it.

I haven't noticed the intermingling and talking with strangers occurring to the degree it did back in the glory days either.

This was my favourite venue ever. Finally closed in 2004, around the time of a lot of the greatest London venues. Just check the attire of the era:
