Vermiculite substitute?
    #2571290 - 04/17/04 04:26 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I was wondering crushed charcoal could be used as a substitute for vermiculite in a casing layer? The packaging says it holds water and evaporates it off as well as filters the water for impurities. I was planning on casing with a peat/verm mix but the store I went to didn't have any verm but they had this charcoal mix so I got it and I just figured I would see if I can use it.

i say....no

First off your not filtering anyting, and it says it evaporates....well thats not good...pearltie evaporates...thats why its not used as a casing...Verm on the other hand holds in water....

So use Verm, peat, or coir
