I'm guessing excess moisture with prep... dry oats make for pretty jars IME (very limited at 20 jars)

I agree caps. That is part of my plan too. The last 30 jars I made were dried for several (about 8) hours longer than my other oats. But my oats don’t look any more wet than the pictures I’ve seen from other people.

So you think germinating endospores before PCing is a BS myth or you just assume my technique is sloppy or that its probably something else?
It's actually a pretty common belief...What endospores have germinated before PC/autoclave will be killed in the pc/autoclave cycle(if done porperly) and thus pointless post sterilization.

If my first 3 shoe boxes were a little too wet I think. Is there anything I can do to dry them out some?
The 4th was to field cap.

lids cracked in dry enough room. it's winter, they should dry up some pretty quick. maybe run a fan across the tops.

I'd just take the lid off for 12-24 hours and let the sub dry out a bit

It's ok to do this why they are colonizing? They have only bee in the shoe boxes for 6 days now.

Then you might be ok...If you bump the curb a little it's not a game killer. Always better to be too dry than too wet, but if its just slightly over I don't think it's gonna suffer. The whole field capacity squeeze test is kinda subjective anyways....

Ok I know proper surface conditions prevent side pins, still new to this so I am trying to get everything right. Not sure if the sub it to thick or maybe I flipped the lids prematurely, or sub was wet/dry. I have only misted it a few times since flipping the lid, the ends get a little dry where the air is coming in. The surface is staying nice and beaded up. I have a few more behind these so I hope to do better next time! Any help is greatly appreciated!

Surface conditions look pretty good, to my lightly trained eye. Got that nice beading going on. I don't think the sub is too thick, just going to provide more water for your fruits when they mature. Did you pack down the sub along the edges? That's supposed to help with the side pins

Thanks for the reply's, yes I lightly pack down the coir and level it out, I am thinking I might try a 50/50 casing on one and a pseudo casing of coir on another to see how it goes and let them colonize longer this time.

not sure that waiting longer will help much with side pins. sometimes that shit just happens. your tub still looks good imo. waiting longer might help with a denser, stronger pinset. good luck
