colonized rye with chamber of water
    #2570953 - 04/17/04 02:15 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

ok, this is what i've done. i colonized 2 quart jars. one with a mix of brown rice and rye. the other is just rye. i broke up the mycelium and put them into 2 separate tupperware containers. they are floating in water at the bottom of a rubbermaid tup. covering the tub is sran wrap and a piece of glass over that. the light sits on top. i hope the mushrooms grow straight off the rye. i need a water heater too. any tips?

ok, so you have your broken up substrait floating in water? First thing you need to do os go strain all the watter out ASAP. Then you can return them to a dry container with a casing layer on top. If they have been in the water for less than 24 hours it should still be fine. if it's been longer than that then it could be dead. once strained put a casing later on top sence you already broke up your substrate. I hope i misunderstood what you have done. If you acualy planed to initiate pins while it was floating in water then you have not done near enough reading to start your first project.

no, what i have going is a couple containers with rye in them. the containers are floating in water in the rubbermaid tub. like the aluminum foil boat floating in water. the rye is dry.

ahh, that makes much more sencehowever i beleave that moist perlite will generate more humidity, dont take my word for that though. When you get your water heater remember to keep it lower than you want it due to metabolism generating heat. I'ld recomend applying a casing layer as it hold more watter and provides a microclimate of more intence humidity ideal for pins to form. also it keeps your substrate from drying out as fast due to transpiration.
