New Emerson national poll out today:

Looks like it’s quickly becoming a 2 person race, at least nationally.

I waited 3 hours at a walk in clinic yesterday (Ontario, Canada) to see a doctor for 5 minutes. This was a follow up to see my results (ridiculous that it even works this way). Last month, I waited 3 hours to get the papers I needed for x-ray and bloodwork.

Walk-in clinic doesn't even call you about the results. No fucks given.

I like free healthcare but I can understand why people have an issue with the way it's functioning and the fact that there is no other alternative.

Oh, I have no "family" physician. I used to, in my home town, but I moved. It sucks not having someone you see regularly who actually knows you.

I know people in this town who have been on the wait list to be lined up with a family doctor for 5 years.

I think it is like this in most cities across the province.

I would guess the reason there’s less wait times in the US is most people can’t afford to get healthcare. If half the country didn’t go to the grocery store because they couldn’t afford to eat, there wouldn’t be lines.

Every country rations healthcare. In most places, rationing is based on need. In the US, it is based in means.

If/when the public wants universal healthcare, we will have universal healthcare.  It's that simple.

Wait lists for primary care physicians are a big problem in the US. I had to pick a doctor 30 miles from my house because no closer doctor was accepting new patients. And I live in a major metropolitan area.

There's a reason for the scarcity of healthcare.  There's a reason that new doctors are largely immigrants.  The field is not as lucrative as it has been in the past, and it's getting less so as insurance companies struggle to make a profit.

Universal healthcare isn't going to help that, either, unless the will of the people is such that taxpayer dollars are used to make medicine a lucrative field again.

There isnt a lack of doctors in the US. There is a shortage of family practice doctors because it is a lower paying specialty. Too many doctors are choosing higher paying specialties. It’s not because family doctors aren’t being paid enough. It’s because specialists are paid too much.

Insurance companies are struggling to make a profit now?

The cost of education makes it less profitable to go into many fields today.  My niece is going to be applying for a PA program, if she goes and enters the field, her student loans and salary will leave her in working poverty.

Instead of importing doctors to serve in rural areas of the country, we should be paying for Americans to go to med school with the stipulation that they practice in underserved areas for a period of time. The way the medical education system works, doctors must begin their careers as residents at teaching hospitals - almost all of which are in cities or more populated areas.

You’re saying medicine is not a lucrative field. That it can’t compete with other professions. I’m saying that family practice cannot compete with other specialties.

Yeah, same problem. People choose what career they want based on how much money they can make, among other factors.  If a career as a family practitioner doesn't pay as much as a career as an orthopedic surgeon, that's going have an effect on which of those careers is more attractive to a person.

IMO most of the Indian and Chinese doctors in the U.S. are second generation immigrants or got here when they were young children. My Indian doctors do not have an accent. I had many Indian friends in grad school and they spoke perfect English but they had accents.

Well not even that, but if someone decided they wanted to open a family practice, they’d be incredibly hamstrung by what is almost certainly mountains of tuition debt. It’s a lot easier to pay off your med school loans by being a cardiovascular surgeon. Same reason a huge contingent of “I’m gonna change the world” law school grads end up working at a corporate firm.

Maybe maybe not. A family practitioner can start earning a decent salary years before a surgeon. A general internist has three years of residency, while a surgeon has 6-8. You essentially earn a stipend as a resident.
