Gettig frustrated.
    #2570580 - 04/17/04 11:26 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Hi all.
I innoculated on the 31st if March and all seemed to go great with the colonization but for the past week I have barelly seen any growth. What makes this so frustrating is that all the cakes are between 80% -95% colonized. Now I believe the incubation parameters are optimal (Temp. +-80F, Hum. +-70%). I am not using any incubation method, I just pu the jars in a closet covered with 2 towels and left a light on in there to generate some heat. Also, I flipped that jars over about a week ago to help air exhange.
Does anybody have some advice? I really wanna get the ball rolling with this.

:frown:

Have you already flipped the jars upside down so that the substrate on the bottom of the jar gets air. I'm not sure if this is actually necessary for the other half of the jar to grow, but i know it helped mine. Peace.

I covered the top of the jars with coffee filters when I turned them around.

your temps are low, optimal temperture for incubation is 86 degrees F,so if yours are around 80,then they will take longer.

my foaf had the same problem when using a light to incubate, he still runs thru that problem, he's had WBS jars sit there for an extra 10 days and temp at 86F and they still dont finish 100% coln. I think its something to do with the light providing a diff type of heat and it dries up the jars, thats my only theory, my foaf needs to get a bigger fishtank heater since the one he has is too little and it sucks :frown:

well the longer they take the more they dry out.so opne could have to do with the other.I cant say for sure but if there are no signs of contams, then its probably either low temps, drying out of jars to some degree(did you boil them longer than normal,or not follow the recipe exactly)or a combo of both.If the moisture content was off a little from the begining, you wouldnt notice it untill the end because there would havebeen enough moisture for the majority of colonization..At least thats what i would think.

I boiled them exactly as the guide said. I got rhizotopes throughout all my jars and there is a good buildup of moisture on the inside of my jars. Can't think that they are too dry, but if they are, how do I fix this, raise humidity?

Thanks for the help so far btw.

Probably need air then.Crack the lids so they are not tight and flip your jars. Then flip them to force the CO2 out.If the moisture is right(and it sounds it)then this should help, contams wont be an issue because they are mostley colonized..You should try to raise the temp up though, because the longer it takes they will dry out.But I have had a similar situation with a few jars and once i cracked the lids so they werent on tight, the jars took off.

Remember (and I know you probably already did this) make sure there is a towle or something under the lids. Screw yourself a little if you take the tape off, flip the jars, and then put them down against a flat piece of plastic or whatever and cut off the air you were just trying to let in.
