Victor Frankl is most famous for his psychological study with 6 words.

"Why do you not commit suicide?"

These words are core to our meaning, they are the antithesis of death, the belief of life.

I had that exact thought tripping last night and it kind of shook me up a bit because I couldn't necessarily come up with much of an answer at the time.

what if suicide is not the escape some think it is.

what if "it", always just "is".

we don't remember before we were born, we remember our journey through consciousness. it's all we've ever had.

when we die, it's that same state as before we were born. which didn't actually exist, for us at least. there was no conscious observer to our subjective lack of consciousness. we've just always existed, in a way

looking at death as some sort of end or escape is placing a lot of faith in the miracle that "we" have evolved perceptions of such an ability as to accurately portray reality, and more faith that we posses an intellect capable of knowing the rules that apply to it. An understanding of perception/sensory neuroscience can have you laughing at the paradox of the whole thing.

we just seemingly have no bearings to understand time, reality, and consciousness. Science can describe our experience in many ways, but it seems like it can never meaningfully explain it.

I choose to stick around and explore the experience to the utmost. I don't know what happens when the brain shuts down, but I do know that with some effort I can always alter my present moment to be something I enjoy or find value in. I'll take that over the unknown, and at the same time use it as practice to embrace the inevitable fact that I will some day face the unknown.

Lol yeah, I can totally get that. I don't think they would be settling words for a tripping person. Not a hell of a lot of reasoning power at that time.

I understand that people in distress could find it hard to come up with an answer as it's suggestive in itself feevers, but if a person can come up with just one it's a beacon of hope and reason to exist. As part of a pre-flight gratitude ceremony they could be very powerful words I think.

I woke up this morning still thinking about this. How grateful I am for my life, my wife, my home and family. My good health and silly brown dog who likes to eat rocks. So many things. Everything. By posing the question in a negative way I realise more than if I asked myself "what am I grateful for?". It looks deeper than I anticipated when I first read it. If I posed the question as "why don't you want to die?" the reasoning completely changes, it assumes that that it's inevitable so why not, which could even indicate futility in the face of adversity.

It kind of I puts the power of life in our hands by supposing that we have control over our own mortality.

This became a large object in my experiences about 6 months ago when i had an extreme wobble, was sort of the beginning of me realising what i was being called towards.

When you balance the nihilism that can be implicit in the question (at least for me) against the power of personal potential i found it quite empowering.
