Early pins on my friends bulk grow...
    #2568447 - 04/16/04 04:07 PM (20 years, 4 days ago)

My friends bulk grow with straw is going great so far. It is at the point where the straw is 25% colonized at the top. There are a few pins developing in the more colonized areas though..Should he pick these out before he adds the casing layer, or should he just leave them and add the casing layer over them?

Also, how much of a casing layer should he put on if his layer of straw is about 2 inches high?

Thanks for the help!

as for the casing layer, it should be a 1/2"...casing layers should usually be 1/4 the substrate depth.

Any thoughts on whether or not he should remove those early pins?

Hey sorry to bump this, but my friend needs advice on whether or not to remove those pins, or just let them grow and put the casing layer over them. Thanks!

I would definitely reccommend removing the pins, overwise they may abort and rot when covered with a casing layer, possibley introducing contamination to your grow. If you have a great number of pins, you can let the substrate flush once, then remove all mushrooms and pins, and then case, but only do this if you have a fairly heavily fruiting substrate. If there are still only a few pins, take them off and case.

The same thing just happened to my friend's straw grow. Now he knows not to check on it twice a day. Anyway, he let the pins grow, and they seem to be doing alright.
