Hi. Im not sure if this belongs in here but it seems close enough. I decided i want to start carving my own pipes. So i went to a craft store got three blocks of pine and a piece carving set.I carved out a square bowl with a fat stem then turned into a cone for the mouth piece. I scareped out a skinny hole for the bowl. But then i needed a hole for the stem. So i took a needle for knitting and sharpened it with a file i bought(along with sand paper and some red oak wood stainer). i made a hole as far as i could with the carving knives then i harmered the needle into the stem. Two days later i was in to the bowl. At this point i was on my way to get a drill. because i was so fed up with hammering the needle. I ended up getting a black and decker rotary drill with accesorys for cutting sanding and carving. i also bought a long drill bit that i wanted to use for drilling the stem hole. It doesnt fit even though the great home depot employee told me it would.
SOOO then i tried to pull the needle out of the stem with some pliars. and it wouldnt budge not an inch. The needle had a curve to it and when i hammered it in there it wouldnt budge
I cut off more then half the stem and am left with a short stub with a huge square bowl. its got a nice carving of an A on one side. The stain looks hot on it.ive smoked out of it and i love it aready.i know pine is probaly bad for pipes . i want to get some briar.
Next im gunna try to make a churwarden bowl with a clay stem.
Anyone a carver i would be interested in some techniques. i cant find much info.

You might look into getting some pipestone. It is a reddish stone that the Sioux used to make the pieces for their pipes. We were in Pipestone, Minnesota once (where it is mined)... and either my dad or my brother made his own bowl with some of it. Let me find a place that might have some....

There are some preformed bowls, some pipestems, and even some slabs of pipestone (probably what you are looking for).
 Peace.
