Ok, whats up with the tequila worm? has anybody tried it. I've heard stories saying they contain hallucinogenic properties, I've heard you only get really drunk off them, and I've you both trip and get drunk off them... whats the real deal with these worms. I just a read a site stating that they were only there marketing purposes and to hide chemical flavours of tequila, but whats the real deal?

I think its more of just a tradition. They are actually healthy from what I have heard. And no, they dont make you hallucinate, unless ofcourse someone pumped acid into them or something :P But the ones in the tequila bottle are just plain meal worms and you can eat them for the hell of it

Do they serve any purpose? Or are they just there?

The drink that has worms in and is often confused with tequila is mezcal, a related but different beverage produced in Mexico. The grub in question is the agave worm (gusano rojo) and there are several theories about its presence in the bottle. One of these is that the worm guarantees the strength of the distilled spirit. Another is that the worm is supposed to endow special powers and is said to have hallucinogenic properties. The addition of the worm to bottles of mezcal dates from the early 1950's and while consumption of it has become somewhat of a young man's rite of passage, it is, in essence, a marketing ploy.

I've always heard it shows the purity of the alcohol in the tequila, the better preserved the worm, the better the tequila
came from a european drinker friend, that could be a crock of shit as I have heard a lot of that too

i asked a guy at a bottle shop one time about it and he told me pretty much the same thing some others have said. its to show the purity or the alcohol, if the worm dies the alcohol is good stuff, or something like that. and no it doesnt get you any more drunk, i used to think that as well.

Yeah, the worm could be pure 200 proof alcohol and it still wouldn't be as intoxicating as even 1/10 of a shot of tequila.
That's kinda like a fear of poising from strychnine on a tiny blotter hit. The hit could be pure rat poison and it probably wouldn't even be enough to harm you.

Yes, the worm dose not actually infest the tequila plant, it is the mezcal plant it is a mexican tradition.

I heard that they used to use the worm to see if the alcohol was potent enough before they sold it. If the warmed died in a certain amount of time then it was good and if it lived to long then obviously it was crap tequila and they didn't sell it.

I was looking at different tequila/mescal brands the other day, and I saw one which put a scorpinon in the bottle. It didn't suggest eating it, but it said if you do, you should "chew it up well and swallow". I'll stick to hamburger, thanks.
