Alienware: Really worth it for the value?
    #2570070 - 04/17/04 02:54 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Draw your own conclusions:

I spent exactly $1200 for my computer alone.

Addendum:
I configured what my computer (and peripherals) would be if I had gone with Alienware, and it turns out with roughly the same specs I would have spent more than $1600 if I had purchased an alienware for the exact same computer.

I like Alienware PCs, although I don't own one personally. People on one side advocate Alienware technology in all fidelity, and the other side are ranting about how over-priced Alienware's products are, and that one would be better off just building thier own PCs with the same specs and so on--except for the unique and captivating Alienware case of course.

If you're a scrupulous person about money, building a PC may be the wiser choice.
However, when it comes to laptops, it's a different story. It's not a common-practice for people to build their own laptops. Hence, I would personally favor buying laptops from the absolute highest-quality source..and at the moment, I favor Alienware in that category.  In other words, if you can't build it--at least, realistically--obtain it from the highest quality builders.

No, definitely NOT worth the money, as opposed to building your own. On the other hand, if you've got money to burn, why not?

Definately not worth the money if you know how to/ know someone that can build computeres. I've heard about peoples Alienwares being busted up upon delivery too. If they were more affordable, I'd get one though.

You don't even need to build one yourself. What you do is go to a comptuer fair, buy all the parts and have the people you bought it from make it for you. It's much cheaper this way, and if you don't know how to build a computer and want to start from scratch, you have choice in everything you buy, and can ask trained people their opinions on it.

Though if you know what you're doing, you can just buy all the parts at a computer fair, take it home and build it yourself.

alienware are definitely NOT worth the money...i spent about $850 on my computer including the monitor about 8 months ago...here are my specs

Asus P4P800 DLX motherboard
Pentium 2.4 w/ 800 mhz FSB (Overclocked to 3.1Ghz right now, stock cooling)
Crucial Micron 3200DDR 512mb ram (overclocked too...i forgot the timings)
ATI radeon 9500np(Overclocked to a 9700np)
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz Sound Card
etc etc

PressView XL 21" CRT monitor....green cold cathodes hooked up to the case with a window...looks nice...performs even better

here are pics...dunno if these will work
Bad Pic
Specs

i'd say learn to build your own comp...it's really pretty simple and becomes addicting once you get the hang of it

Do note that for ~SOME~ aspects of building yourself or buying from a discount place, the individual pieces may vary wildly in quality -- this accounts for ~some~ of the difference in price.

Seriuosly I like well modded cases better then most stuff alienware has and if you build and mod yourself you can save a good deal of money. Though modding and trouble-shooting your own home built pc is time consuming so you do have to weigh the time you will spend versus getting a pre-built cool looking one.
