I've got some malt extract but its dark grade and atleast a year old. Some plates have worked great while others with no growth at all. I used to use loads of malt with my plates and kept getting really tomentose growth, tried half the malt and the growth was still the same, halved again: no growth. I'm gunna attempt a 3:3:3 ratio: 3g malt 3g agar 300ml water, I feel like its still loads to much nute, but it's what the teks say. Drop your agar teks

Go back to your half malt amount but increase amount of agar to mix. My plates were going very fluffy and this was suggested to me. Transfers were to the firm agar and that sorted me out! Only need softer agar for spore -> agar ...then firm for all transfers!

Have you tried using grain soak water instead? Or in combination with? Search it up if you've never heard of it, guess it's pretty new. I only found out about it recently.
I haven't used it for mixing agar yet but I've used it for LC's with great success. I have seen people post about using it for agar.

I'm using 20% diluted oat GSW 2% agar and 2% cat food. It's working great.

5g agar
2g malt will post results
