casing issue
    #2569723 - 04/16/04 10:17 PM (19 years, 11 months ago)

Well i made two casings 3 days ago of 60/40 coir/verm. I placed them in these airtight rubbermaid containers and began to incubate anyway i realized today their has been no growth and that your not suppose to store them airtight. I was wondering if i killed the mycelium maybe from locking out all the air or will i be okay now if i crack them open and just continue to incubate till growth occurs?

Hello Shroomchef, Thats sad to hear hopefully they might still be ok open them up and incubate away ! see what happens.

I would not disturb them, if you dont see any visable change after another 4 days take a closer look. Perhaps open one up after the week and see if anythings alive.

they should be fine, if anything the mycelium went dormant (sp?) best to do is open up and fan...

huh? I've never used coir, but the basic rule is, if it doesn't smell like mushroomy dirt musk, then you're in trouble.

Coir does almost have a musty type smell to it normally. At least the "Bed A Beast" brand I have used does. It is more organic, almost earthy, but not quite a contaminated smell (strong odor).

Just poke a few holes in the lid of the container, or cut a hole and tape a tyvek filter in place. It would take some time for the mycelium to actually die off. It's metabolism was simply slowed down because of the higher Carbon dioxide build up. It will burst back to life full steam if everything else is in order, and the sweet smell of mycelium will emerge...

sweet smell?I had some brf jars that showed no signs of contams but the smelled sweet, like a "buttery smell" almost- I assumed it was a bacterial infection and I tossed them.Didnt want to take the chance. If it doesnt have a profound mushroom smell or no smell at all,I would be worried a little.

Just my two cents worth!
