do these look safe to eat?
    #2569580 - 04/16/04 11:19 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I grew some cubensis off of a cake. They grew fine and all, but when they dried. the caps turned black. Also, 2 of them had some mold growing off of the cap, i threw those away. Anyways, what would cause the caps to turn black after drying? perhaps I left them on the cake too long and they started to rot? any feedback would be appriciated!!! check out my pictures thanks...

there was no mold on the cake at all; however, some puffy white stuff did grow out of the center of the caps of two shrooms. Would that be any indication as to whether they may be contaminated? And is it normal for them to turn dark when they dry?

Those are safe to eat, I had that happen to me (caps turned black, left them in my car all night in the cold). Its environmental conditions that causes it. Next time use a fan or a dessicant.

I see gills that are black. The one exposed cap in the pic is a golden color. When caps open up they release spores which are often attracted to the cap surface and turn it black. The cottony growth you explained is likely the mycelium from the mushrooms you grew. Check this out:

The mushroom was fine, sometimes the mycelium that forms the fruit goes back into vegatative growth and forms the white fuzzy stuff called mycelium.

Here are some insanely black mushrooms from spores:

Your fruits look perfectly fine to me. If there is something I am not seeing, let me know or post a pic of what exactly you are concerned about.

Joshua is right, they look fine.
Anyway, for how long were they drying ?

> they look fine

Do they smell fine? If so, then probably safe. If they smell like a septic tank, then toss them.
