Compost not colonizing
    #2569097 - 04/16/04 08:49 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I spawned compost+verm with ecuador popcorn 3 days ago. Layered.

The mycelium doesn't even want to touch the compost. Its actually avoiding it, the compost layer is almost acting like a casing layer.

I had no way of checking pH so I ignored that aspect completely.

Anyway, since there is almost no literature on compost specifically 'round these parts, maybe I could get some guidance?

How did you pasteurize it? Does it smell or look wet?

I Pc'ed it for 30-40 mins. Looks on the dryish side of moist, smells mush-like, earthy and quite nice actually.

I can say with a high degree of certainty that I have no contams or bacterial blooms as of yet.

I'd say the moisture is perfect, damp but not soggy.

First time spawning compost though, I was expecting the mycelium would take to the compost faster than this.

I followed pfcake standards in obtaining my moisture and airiness for the compost layers.

Hello Derek, Some compost has fungiside in it i think that could be a possible reason why your mycelium is avoiding it. Like fallenshroom said give it time thats the only way to tell.

Later NoG

The primary reason for my experimentation with compost is that I happened across a 10lb bag of it for around 00.75USD.

I bet high mountain compost would do a killer job, but although I may fantasize about paying 35 dollars for a 10lb bag of decaying organic matter, and shipping it internationally for who knows how much more, I could never realistically get my hands on any.

NoG, you might be right about that fungicide, but hell, it *does* cost 7.5 cents a pound, and since I am in south america, it might not have anything but the rotting garbage and manure it says it has on the bag.

I guess all I can do is wait, but I appreciate all the replies.
