Hi guys,
Spent the past few months reading and reading all about mushrooms on this site. Fantastic site by the way. I love it. Finally after my eyes started to go square i pucked up the courage to try my first grow.

I ordered 2 spore syringes and put them both to agar (still waiting for something), so made two separate liquid cultures using spores into honey and water. Not recommend I know.
One went bad and cloudy so I through it away. The other looked ok so tried it out on pk tek.



I decided to use a pc to sterilize, I did this for 1 hour at 13psi (highest my pc goes). Only managed 3 jars at a time, with different results.

First 3 jars had splatted rice on the side of the glass, knocked them up on the 15th dec and added lc and so far the fasted movers.



Next 3 seemed to look much better, knocked them up 16th dec and added lc, much slower results without the rice splatter.


I have now made another 8 brf jars waiting to inoculated but first wanted to see if my progress so far looks ok before I go ahead and waste them.

UPDATE!!!

So here is an update

Since I last posted I noticed my jars weren't colonizing on the bottom properly.
To me they looked too compact and maybe too wet.



So flipped them over and dislodged them from the bottom.

After 24 hours here is the improvement



So what do you think? Is it possible I have opened them up to contamination by doing this or will I be ok?

looks ok, but i would try following the tek to a T.

Use wide mouth 1/2 pt

Should wipe off excess BRF from side of jar before putting on your dry verm layer so contams can't travel down.

BRF doesn't necessarily need to be pressure cooked but the recommended steam time is at least 90mins, preferably 120 mins.

Good luck and keep at it. Try to have more than one project going at a time, stay organized. :thumbup:

I will do. I have cyans on agar too atm, done first transfer the other day after nearly a month of waiting for spores to germinate. Plates were clean after 2 weeks and no signs of anything growing, even bacteria.

After the transfer each piece went completely white.

Yeah but if you got a PC its far better than steaming in every way, also wouldnt need 90-120 mins as with steaming due to the increased temps used in PCing getting the core upto temp faster. But it doesnt hurt to let it go a little longer.
Also those are wide mouth 1/2 pint jars to me.

After a second look at those jars the myc looks a little weird maybe just tomentose, are they cubes? Or cyans?

I use ball but its a fetish i have. Love ball jars, whenever i found them cheap id buy a shit load. Ive got cases and cases of them new and unused, as i keep reusing the old ones. I cant bring myself to bin the used ones.

Yes they are wide mouth 1/2 pint jars. Used jam jars actually which are perfect size.

They are cubes, not too sure what variety as I didn't label my two lcs. One went bad so I threw it out, the other one was good. I bought tressure coast and pes Amazonian. So I will only know for sure if they fruit.

The cyans is a separate project aimed for an outside bed for next autumn. Thats the one im most excited about but this is my first time so Im sure I will have plenty teething problems.

Well done on using the correct terminology by saying variety and not strain most would incorrectly say Amazonian strain. Your gonna do well here mate. Thats a nicer picture theyre looking ok the myc looked a little grainy in the other pics but i can clearly see the myc in these.

Thanks matey. I have done some research. Just knocked up some golden teacher jars and some aztec god jars, labeled this time :wink:
Gonna put the rest of the lcs I bought to agar to save for later and maybe make some working lcs so I can go again in a few weeks time.

Also due to serious lack of space I was going to use bods tek where he simply places a ziplock bag over the top of the jar.

Am I right in thinking that I need to take  them out of jar, clean off verm, soak for 12-18hrs, place back in jar, add new verm layer, mist and place the bag on top.

Hi Tomchef27,

I too am on my first grow. I just harvested my first mushies the other day. There were a couple really big ones on my cake but all the others were tiny so I just took the big ones once the caps opened up. The rest stopped growing and several have turned blue (yes I have my own thread, not that anyone have given a crap enough to reply).

If I can offer any advice at all:
1.Watch/buy the Let's Grow Mushrooms video series
2. Follow instructions to a T(as swatt-haze mentioned), and I mean to a T!

You can just pour some water in the jars if you remove them then soak them id imagine theyll expand and be difficult to put back in the jars. Invitro fruiting which is what your talking about, yep zip lock on top with holes in it works, as does open air without zip lock. Zip lock helps keep the surface moisture in so it doesnt dry off too fast, but the verm layer will keep it moist also without a bag on top just have to remember to check it make sure it doesnt dry out and spray when needed.
Ps i always soak for 24 hours, mushrooms being made up of 90% their weight is water the more the cakes soak up the bigger the mushrooms get.

This also just remember perlite in the bottom and holes on every surface inc. Bottom and lid. Pop bottles cut in half also work.

Your all great, thanks so much for the advice. As I have a few jars of each I may try different methods for each variety and see which one produces the better results.

Hello zoomer,
I will check out your thead today. Why do you think your other mushrooms stopped growing?
Did you think about cloning the biggest one on agar and isolating the most aggressive strain. I have no clue myself but maybe it would have been an idea.

Until I read your thread I wont know how you did it but from what ive read, multi spore inoculation will produce very mixed results when fruiting. The less strains the better unless you manage to be lucky and have all great fruiters within the same grow.

My grow atm is multi spore but I have put them all to agar for my next to see the difference.

I can see the difference already when it comes to the different spores that germinate on an agar plate by looking at my cyan plates.

It is a clean plate, just looks dodgy with smash in it.

This is my mea agar is clear as crystal. And I will be using that fron now on.
