Cambridge specializes in analyzing voter demographics for targeted engagement. Should be noted that the DNC voter database was hacked in addition to the emails.

As was the RNC, they just didn't release anything publicly.

Of course we know what they did with the data. They profiled individuals in order to target them with personalized political advertisements.
Yes, that's what I assume, but maybe I didn't quite ask the right question. Given that they use nefarious and illegal tactices like bribes, blackmail, prostitution, and whatever else I think that raises the more pertinent question of what was the extent to which they used the data.
What was the extend that they targeted people with political ads? Or what else did they do with the data? There's no evidence to show they did anything else with it that I'm aware of.

We still don't know that. Concord Management is challenging this claim in court. It'll be really interesting to see how that pans out.

What else did they do with the data. No, there is no evidence, but until the channel 4 documentary where the CEO or whatever (CFO?) that they used bribes, prostitution, and extortion there was no evidence of thst either. I hsve little reason to believe such activities haven't occurred and every reason to suspect they have.
As far as we know, no, they received no emails. I was only illustrating an known interest to be involved on their part.
Again, I'm not talking about this specific troll farm either, just the topic of manipulating people on the internet by paid trolls, or bots, and fake ad campaigns. Really the trolls are what mostly concern me, people know an ad is trying to sell them something, there's something much more sinister with creating fake comments and content.
I try to imagine if you realized one day that 20% of the people you encountered on a daily basis turned out to be fake and devoted solely to decieving you in some way yet under the guise of their own free will (eg. They're not trying to sell you something in a marked uniform). It's really no different.

This is a timely article:
Senate Reports On 'Russian Influence Campaign' Fail To Discuss Its Only Known Motive
Quote:
Even if there were data of an influence operation, there is no reason to believe that silly Internet Research Agency memes, like the "Army of Jesus" one below, changed even one vote.

We showed in The "Russian Ads" On Facebook Are Just Another Click-Bait Scheme that the IRA people simply created pages on Facebook and elsewhere to attract as many 'eyeballs' as possible. This so called 'click bait' was used to lead people to webpages on which the IRA sold advertisement space.
This was confirmed when the Mueller investigation indicted the IRA as described in Mueller Indictment - The "Russian Influence" Is A Commercial Marketing Scheme. Point 95 of the indictment says in relation to wire fraud accusations:
Defendants and their co-conspirators also used the accounts to receive money from real U.S. persons in exchange for posting promotions and advertisements on the ORGANIZATION-controlled social media pages. Defendants and their co-conspirators typically charged certain U.S. merchants and U.S. social media sites between 25 and 50 U.S. dollars per post for promotional content on their popular false U.S. persona accounts, including Being Patriotic, Defend the 2nd, and Blacktivist.
The IRA was out to make money, not to influence elections.

It certainly makes it look more legit. And click bait means more eyes. There’s something to be said for immersing yourself in the role you are playing as well.

I'm curious what Enlil's take is on how something like this should be dealt with.

Dealing with foreign governments who try to influence our politics by paying people to troll the internet, or Russians pretending to be cat ladies in Iowa. Do you have an opinion on how a situation like that might be controlled?

Whether their motive is to cause chaos or make money they are still causing great harm to us.
Quote:
Together, the 20 most popular pages generated 39 million likes, 31 million shares, 5.4 million reactions and 3.4 million comments. Company officials told Congress that the Russian campaign reached 126 million people on Facebook and 20 million more on Instagram.
10s of millions of people not only saw these posts but interacted with them, yet you don't think they were influential? Do you think McDonalds advertisements do not influence anyone to eat hamburgers?
