Douglas fir wood pellets question
    #25687994 -

Trying to source wood pellets and having a rough time. Used search and it seems lowes/homedepot dont have much to offer and ace is expensive. I live down south so they are probably hardly used for heating down here.

Lowes had these...
https://www.lowes.com/pd/Golden-Fire-40-lb-Wood-Pellets/3522746
They could special ship BUT they are 100% douglas fir

I've read a lot of threads where people might be parroting that Dfir is bad but one poster mentioned he had success. Posted ~5 years ago

"I've grown oysters, reishi, lions mane, shiitake, maitake, and agrocybe aegrita on doug-fir wood pellets."

Anyone have any recent success with 100% Dfir pellets? Seems to be my best option so far.

I can't help with your question of Douglas fir but I was able to source oak pellets at a  local sporting goods store ( sporsman warehouse) that has wood pellets for smoking meat. They are trager 100% oak pellets. I live in the desert so we don't use heat stoves, hell my front door is open right now, I don't even run my heater.

hahah Yea I see a ton of the pellets for grilling but they cost an arm and a leg @ ~ $1/pound. The heating pellets are around $5-8 for a 40# bag.

1 bag will make 10 block at 15 bucks, it's not nearly as cheap as fuel pellets but it doesn't break the bank unless your trying to make alot of blocks.

I guess the big question is how well they do compared to "ideal" hardwood pellets.

I guess I'll have to test both but if anyone has first hand experience or you don't mind asking your buddies. I'm focusing on oysters for now.

Update. Spoke to both and were very helpful. Looks like nether of them had trouble with DF pellets compared to HW. No delayed growth or fruiting issues.

Going to do some testing too but good to know.

Just wanted to update in case anyone else stumbled into this post in the future.

You can read the scientific article on my signature where they used fermented pine in a 5 5 2 ratio

Of pine oak and bran the fermentation greatly improved results and inhibited mold growth for 30 days when directly inoculating the substrate with mold.

Fermentation also inhibits mushroom mycelium,  due to acidifying substrate.  Seen it many times, and it's why you should check pH of raw sawdust

I would process over 200lb at a time. I would ensure the pH was 8.5 testing first with a digital pH soil as a point of reference than using pH strips with adding distilled water into a glass and some substrate.

I would add sugar to my pile too while I let it sit out for two weeks and turn it every few days. This would not be a soak. I would have a sawdust pile at field capacity still in the yard. Would use a metal rake to turn the pile. I would sometimes use yeast to see if it would be much different in results. I did not notice anything.

If it was pH 8.5 your meter must be broken, i have never heard of a basic sawdust .  Also fermentation usually refers to anaerobic fermentation.  By definition turning a compost pile adds oxygen, very different from the anaerobic connotations.  Did you ever grow anything?

Yesh man your starting to need things spelled out for you.

1.) additives are added besides sawdust and bran to get this pH. It is not going to get to this pH

2.) It grew plenty. My friend took some of my sawdust bags and they even grew in his house without any added humidity.

3.) I wonder what happens when you only turn the sawdust pile every few days and only move the pile to make sure the outer layers get some time inside the damp pile. This is done over 1-2 weeks.

This is done in Asia and where I learned this and did further research online.

If you have any other questions I recommend google

A farm I visited in Asia and worked at for a few weeks to see how they did things. I took this back home and did it here. In Asia we inculated our sterilized bags open air. In a single go I would inoculate a few hundred bags.

What I said is nothing new. Softwood is still not best substrate but is workable.

I don't get good yields with only Douglas fir wood pellets. But when I supplement the pellets it does just as well as hard woods.

I was interested in actual edibles, reishi obviously love conifers and tolerate low humidity

Yes it does it with oysters too. That is what I did it with in the US. I no longer have a lot of my photos. I lost my camera.

Here is a king I grew on Douglas fir

This was done before I started fermenting. Fermenting I saw better results.

Tractor Supply has Hard wood Fuel Pellets, SKU #319516399, 40lb bags are only $5ea. So. Much. Win. I had the same problem in a very urban area & am too cheap to overpay

Depending on where you are Atwoods or a similar TSC-esq store or local artisan/small sawmill might fit the bill.

Best,
B

How do firs, pines and conifers compare in terms of resin or antifungal properties?

^^ THIS!!! Shortly after the post i found a TS that had them. should be able to pick up some bags for my first grow this weekend. Fully expecting some huge newb mistakes and contamination city but looking forward to diving in.

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!! Stoked you were able to find some close. Nothing worse than having a simple solution and not being able to implement it.  In my limited experience with them thus far they're pretty contam free both fresh from bag when inoculated with mass spore slurry directly, as well as, after running through PC cycle. I've been roughly following Stamet's ratio's for supplemented/enriched sawdust. Stand alone pellets have been successful as a casing layer in the few experiments I've had a chance to run with some extra quarts of whole oat spawn (atl7).

Big fan of these things so far. Coolest thing since adding spores to canola & using as bar oil in chainsaw.
