A noobs [and industrial hygienist's] take on Martha TEK ---
    #25687586 -

Hi all, 1st time post here and I wanted to say thanks in advance for all the good info which has set me in the right direction with this great hobby. I wanted to share my take on the MARTHA where I utilized a small ultrasonic/cool mist humidifier inside of a $30 3 tier greenhouse I purchased from Home Depot. For FAE consideration, I strategically cut a small rounded slit into the plastic canopy of the 3 tier housing and backed the humidifier against that slit so that the air intake holes of the humidifier receive fresh air from outside. I then inserted a partial cardboard toilet paper tube into the slit so that the hole stays open to the humidifier intakes located along the bottom curve of the base:
http://
http://
This allows fresh air exchange without static pressure/ excessive moisture and burden of tubing assembly I see in other prototypes. I have been running IAQ tests inside the chamber using a fairly high-end Particles Plus IAQ meter. The humidity levels were a bit excessive at 1st -but were easily remedied by partially unzipping door just at the bottom tier. CO2 looks great
at 600-700 PPM, temperature is between 74-78 F, RH, stays around 97% -A beautiful NON-condensing environment!
I have my PF classic cakes in there --and once I get comfortable fruiting the cakes this round, I will move on to casing methods.
Please let me know if anything jumps out as needing adjustment or change. I will post updates on my actual yields.
Thanks so much -Happy Holidays!

Hey!

Looks good!  Mine is virtually the same except I have the humidifier outside the chamber and pumping in air pipes over from the top.

Curious how much you unzip the bottom.  I have not had good fruits in mine and need to get it tuned up.  I think if the temp in my garage comes down to tolerable range it may be ok, if your unzip truck helps with FAE.  But I have a heater in front of it to keep it around 70-72.

Here is my setup.

cakes are so easy to do that making an entire tent for their low yields is awkward. if it's the way you want to go so be it but

no tent, no humidifier, no cleaning, no maintenance, no dialing in
just cakes in their jar with a ziploc baggie over the top and mist them once a day or so.

Bodhi,

What do you think would happen if we fruited the jars in our tent with a bag on top like you did?  Tent is nice because everything is self contained.  And a lot of us are relegated to the garage.

Just an idea.

What thinketh you?

I find a greenhouse to be kind of overkill for cubes and definitely overkill for cakes. Unless you are doing something like 1000 quarts of spawn every other week and need the ergonomics and clean up afforded by a tray or bag in a greenhouse, so it’s a bit like smashing flies with a sledgehammer. If you are doing that amount you would probably also want a fruiting room, something like 12’x10’ or so.

However a little Martha will be a nice thing to have if you decide you want to dabble in exotics or gourmet species on a small scale later. That would make the build worthwhile. But for a handful of cube cakes that is definitely a lot more money and work than I would be willing to invest.

since it would be humid outside the bag an inside the bag there would probably be less air exchange and evaporation happening, probably would work, maybe not as well

Nice, Thanks --yes def looks solid. The only thing that I can see of yours that might be worth saying is you might not trust a digital hygrometer or thermometer for fine tuning. The disparity between my $30 digital combo hyg/therm and my calibrated analog Fischer is 25- 35 % (the Fischer hyg is +/- 4% from my $ 8000 IAQ meter I use for work. I unzipped the door up to the mid shelf and stuck an open tub of damp perlite on the bottom shelf to add moisture source and to further semi-contain the environment. Using the professional IAQ meter I was able to datalog over a day to show FAE to be adequate via the humidifier and unsealed bottom alone (no fans or additional holes or separate air pump). I can now run the humidifier constantly without creating condensation which may have more to do with very evenly balances ambient temperatures. . I do fan and mist from time to time only because I hope to occasion pinning through evaporation but I may experiment with set and forget soon as the shine of this hobby wears off a bit.

Have you tried isolating your setup in your garage to create a separate little room for the purpose of balancing your inner/outer temps? You could probably do it quite cheaply and that would eliminate condensation issues that arise in humid air contacting colder surfaces. It's actually the reason I avoided my garage but was also open to engineering a solution if it had to be. I dont share my bathroom though so I went with that;)
Good luck and please keep posting with your controls and results.

Overkill at 60$ and less than 2 hours of construction modification work?  You get a highly adaptable very low maintenance system that should last -and be available for future endeavors that will include bulk casing techniques:smile:

I can build a monotub for $10 bucks in 5 min. Low maintenance? Monotubs are set and forget once you get the process dialed in. Come back in 2 weeks to harvest.

Good call on the temp gauge/ hygrometer...  my humidistat has a much more accurate reading.  I just wanted an idea of temperature...  most times of the year, temp won’t be an issue.  I may invest in one of a better quality, but for now I’m ok.

I ditched the perlite, and went with a heavy duty trash bag with a hole in the center and a rock weighing down the excess water to flow into a drip pan.

I think you should pump in your humidity...  same concept of FAE, and will keep it running longer than keeping it in your GH.  I recommend not putting it in the exact center, maybe towards the back wall would be best...  the PVC drips occasionally, so I have to avoid the center of the GH.

Keep me posted on your grow.

I’m actually having good success ( better than cakes in the GH by putting a tub filled with wet verm..  basically an HC, but have the top removed.  My fruits are a lot thicker and healthier looking.  I may move them all to the tub tonight...  that is...  after I inoculate another 20 BRF cakes I sterilized last night.

Most people need to be familiar with the organism before they can optimize anything. But you do you, could be that out of the 1000’s of people that fail first time up to bat on projects like this, you may be the exception. Good luck.

It'll be a while before that happens. I thought after my first flush id be less crazy. But now I'm more crazy. It's a good crazy. None the less. What i think these fine gents here are trying to say is the Martha is effective for bulk tray and bag fruiting (bags for gourmet like oysters) but when it comes to BRF cakes there are much simpler ways to fruit them.

This may be a test run that's cool too. If you want to stick with BRF check out Bod's easy AF shoebox Tek. Just my  :2cents:

Thank you - definitely helpful and much appreciated . I should say I have had some moderate success with sgfc/ pf tek, hippy tek and this was to be my foray into bulk casing. A vendor was pushing surplus of Pf classic syringe very cheap so I bought MANY only to later read on this site that the ‘strain’ is kinda weird at bulk and better suited for cakes. So here I am just working with what I got and consider this a working beta for getting conditions right inside my greenhouse for many more experiments to come. Because of my professional background certifying clean rooms in biotech and semiconductor industry I am lucky to have access to serious IAQ equipment and am trained in Industrial Hygiene clean room certification procedures. I’m hoping the hard data I collect will eliminate some of the wheel-spinning regarding creating the perfect fruiting environment and the soft experiential side y’all give me is invaluable, much appreciated:)
I’m psyched I got some pins in past few days -PF Classic IS weird! Pins are as big as my biggest toe!

Thanks Fun, I did what you suggested, fanned them till they looked damp rather than wet -and now I just periodically crank up the ultrasonic for an hour or so until a nice cloud forms and rh is greater than 100% (117%) and cakes are now glistening. Then I aim a small fan inside the MARTHA to “remove the glistening” and then attenuate the ultrasonic back down to very low setting  where rh steady maintain 90-97% for several hours. CO2 is 590-670. I do this humidity blasting instead of misting. I have pins forming like crazy now and my fruits are fat and healthy. Pin to harvest 5 days.
These are PF classics .

Ok I, a nub, also with a tent doing mono tubs. I have had a failure and a small win. yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
so my GT was a fail, not total. they are coming around after dunking them. My temps were to high so now 72 degrees max if I can help it.
got the Martha and all the bells and whistles.
got Mo D's and B+ in, semi success. Just done dunking them. OH had a MD 10.5 gram. whooo hooo. but the 2nd one was bigger. spores....

here is an idea for more FAE on a timer. thought before I punch a hole in the tent.

A computer fan, attached to a Amish macaroni salad container with poly fill as a filter attached to the tent and do it on a timer.
I have 90 plus humidity with out the bells and whistles. IOW I have just a air pump and stone for humidity running and not the fan/heater assembly with lava.

ok cant figure out how to attach a pic.

so it is simple. I drilled holes in the lid of the container to allow air flow and hold the poly in. the other end of the container was cut open for air flow and filter change/cleaning. The fan was silicon'd to the lid to PULL the air out into the tent.

Attaching to the tent? my theory was to clear tape the crap out of it, 3-4 layers, the size of the opening of the lid/container. Cut it out just smaller than the opening. I then snap it together and add some more tape for support. Back up. I plan on having the fan just shelf high for support and or maybe zip tie it.

then add a timer. Now the next question is, ok, a min or 2-4 times a day? it will move some serious air.

just checked it, air/fan drying, and the air movement is not so much. May cut more holes. But I dont want to suck the poly into the fan and cause a fire or have to much air movement. But it will be placed low on the tent.

Ok beat the nub up... LOL. thanks for any guidance.

Dude,  check out my journal.  I have everything I did on there.

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/postlist.php/Journal/426622

I punched some holes in the tent but not sure they are helping much...  I also unzipped my doors to about 20% open.  I don’t have perlite.  Just a hole in the bottom where water runs into a drip pan.

I recommend misting and fanning your cakes..  mine have taken off.  I have them in a tub and it is filled with wet vermiculite... and has aluminum boats for the cakes.

I can and mist 2-3x per day.  And my flushes have been starting to be really nice.

Very Cool Fun -a natural work of art indeed! Beautiful XMas gift packages arriving just in time for the holidays;) Thanks too, I don't know actual fresh weight because my scale is too small and I already started drying process. This is for my own private research anyhow. As for size difference, based on site anecdotes I am guessing the "strain" type PF Classic may have much to do with jumbo size fruits. Earlier in this thread one of the mods suggested my pins were bloated with dark caps due to "over saturation"(which I took to mean too much water) and so I dialed back misting a bit -however those bloated pins were actually the ones that evolved into the largest healthiest fruits. Initially upon cutting back on misting my cakes became very light w/ bluish bruising hue and some tipped over due to weight of fruit so I reversed course and sprayed liberally. I noticed in this crop the fruits started off as dark headed mutants but normalized considerably by day 3 or 4 -even with increased misting. It was a great crop and continues to bring daily yields.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention I brought my temps up to 85-90F and growth seemed to just explode -so there I left it! I understand that contams like warmer temps too, but I already produced enough for my own research so I figured I would try to carry out for experiment/ experience. Barely noticeable pins turn to harvest-able fruits in less than 5 days at these temps.

Well it’s appears you have it dialed in pretty well. So now what you should do is spawn grain to bulk in trays or shoeboxes and see better returns. Run a few edibles, Cyclocybe aegerita would be a nice candidate. Just to do cakes in that would be a waste.
