Grain spawn questions

I've been working with wheat recently and had great results but without a few trial and error bringing up some questions about A) Soaking grain before spawning
And
B) Excess condensation after PC ing

So I've always broken up, sniffed and then soaked my spawn before putting to coir but some people have said it's pointless/disruptive? I thought it gave the grain a hydration boost?

I also tried the regular rr boil and steam dry method and the grains went in the PC nearly bone dry and came out almost like mushy peas, followed by bacillus contamination.


Next up I tried steaming the grain, then layering inbetween two towels and then using a hair dryer, the grain was as if not hydrated at all. Following a PC the grain seemed dry coming out at first but later started to condensate all on the inside of the jars, again, so I baked the jars fucking up the water content in the process but the grains were finally remaining dry inside the jar, I'm considering trying a different prep method. I've heard over hydration is a thing.:shrug:

Your second attempt was correct. You shouldnt be baking anything. :bigblunt:Shake once after a pc cycle and then the morning after. Redistributing the moisture is very important.

If you do grain prep right the moisture is all on the inside and visibly dry on the outside. Just like agar no pours if you wait 2 days a lot of excess moisture will evap on its own.

I prep milo with a huge mesh frame and a box fan so the grain completely dries quickly.

Your grain is supposed to look dry on the outside, hydrating grain after its colonized is definitely not a good idea, your bulk substrate if properly hydrated (field capacity) is where your myc will get its water from, follow the tek to save yourself this headache man, mush on 👌🤙

You can soak, the key is spreading your grains out so the water can evaporate after your boil session, no need for hair dryer, as the steam rises the grains will start looking right,😉

I'm a noob, I understand your frustration. I started off with having moisture and ge issues. This was using an outdated brf cake tek. I switched to full hull oats and have had pretty decent success. The moisture content sounds easier to play with.

had problem the first few times i made grain jars, i soak for 24 hours, simmer for 20 to 30 minutes. Strain and lay it out on a towel until cool and dry usually 30 minutes, then load em up. I also put a little gypsum in the water i soak and boil them in. basically follow this video and its perfect every time with no clumping.
