Odds are with peat moss only the pH level is going to favor contaminant growth rather than mycelial growth.
Organic peat humus works well on its own, but is much closer to neutral pH-wise.

I would not use just peat moss. I have done this and granted it does work but I find that the growth of the mushroom is limited due to the lack of nutrients. Just throw in some birdseed (finch is best) it is cheap and easily found at k-mart etc. P.S if you use the seed use a pressure canner.
Happy Growing

You COULD use just peat if you wanted to, but I would reccomend you buffer it with a little lime. Like the chicks said, staight peat is loved by contams. You can use chloroplast strips to verify pH as you go. I find it hard to beat Jiffy Mix from Wal-mart though.

Peace.
