Is Vermiculite even safe to be used for Cultivation??

After listening to episode 1213 of the Joe Rogan podcast with Dr. Andrew Weil where he speaks about the dangers of Vermiculite exposure which lead many in a mining town to come down with asbestosis, Im now deeply concerned about mine and others on this forums exposure to Vermiculite as apparently asbestos can still be found within its fibers.

Even today Vermiculite can still contain asbestos within its fibers..... apparently even if it only contains 1% asbestos it can still be extremely dangerous and apparently it's most likely to be found in the dust of Verm which as we all know is almost always found at the bottom of a bag of Verm....so why on earth are we all using it for Cultivation when apparently it still poses a health risk?

I did do a search for a similar thread on here before posting this and all I found were posts asking if it was safe to eat nothing specifically about exposure in general.

Please share your thoughts on the matter.

Wear a mask.  You’re not dealing with tons, just a cup or two.

if I know I'll be working with a product that produces dust I do what I have to to prevent breathing it.

Ppe (personal protection equipment) for verm is a simple dust mask. 

If you’re that concerned get a respirator

I had heard about it being very bad to breathe in but I had no idea it contains asbestos

Holy fuck. I'm gonna wear a dust mask from now on..

Rockwool has a similar hazard, but once vermiculite or rockwool gets wet you are much less likely to encounter dust. Seems like perlite dust isn’t the best thing to breathe either.

Vermiculite being produced doesn't contain asbestos anymore since like the '90s. And the product Zonolite that did was only sold in North America.

Even asbestos itself comes in different types and they aren't all equally harmful. But still even without the cancer etc, mineral dust can eventually cause silicosis type problems if you inhale enough of it, I believe. I don't exactly know what kinds of materials are the worst for your lungs on a nano-level.

I'd be interested to know how it compares to wood dust in a workshop...

Anyway make it wet if you want less dust? And yeah wear a mask for the dusty parts and work with it outside.

    I like medical masks,  but anything will do.  Even a hanky is adequate

    Asbestos can still be present in today's Verm even if it is only 1% that 1% still can pose a risk. So my question is what would be the next best alternative if we say didn't want to take the risk anymore?

    I definitely notice dust in the bottom of all my bags of Verm and I definitely wasn't being overly cautious handling it. So it does seem we might wanna take Verm use more seriously than we do. Cancer runs in my family so anything I can do to mitigate the risk I will.

    What's baffling though is the complete lack of any warnings on the bag of Verm...You would think WHIMIS would be all over this.

    Brother, asbestos is still used all over.  Brakes on every vehicle are still asbestos.  Put a mask on and rest at ease.  You’ll die of butthole cancer or a car wreck anyway

    I hope you don't drink diet soda cuz aspartame is really bad for the body, or eat any processed foods cuz the preservatives that are used in them are straight up poison, I doubt the amount of verm that anyone of us handle is going to cause any problems.

    I don't drink pop period as it as a whole is bad for your health. What's funny though is regular full sugar pop is probably better for you than diet coke as they use real cane sugar or High fructose corn syrup instead of aspartame to sweeten it. Still 40 grams of sugar per can.... Jesus that's insane. And then you see some pleb at McDonalds ordering a super sized coke at McDonalds god only knows how much sugar is in one of those.

    No wonder most Americans are obese.

    First of all it’s called “soda”

    Second, fructose is fructose.  Doesn’t matter where it came from. 

    Lastly, the things you’re exposed to every day just walking down the street are much worse.  Cfg’s, pesticides etc.  Vermiculite is just a silicate material.  Wear a mask and keep trucking
