Starting bioremediation project looking for candidate fungi * 1

hey folks so Im starting a 5 month project experimenting with fungi and bioremediation. Just wondering what people on the shroomery know about different fungi and there affinity to do break down complex polymers and move toxins. I have 12 species that im right now working with but id like to include more if possible.

You'd be better off looking into bacteria
There's one fungi that kinda barely touches one kind of plastic.

Regarding mycofiltration, doesn't really work and even if it did, wouldn't take long for the mycelium to go anarobic and die.  One idea I heard is to just dump a truck load of wood chips in the stream, and let nature do the rest.  At least that way you are not wasting energy making spawn.  No idea if this works at all.

You can eat oil with oyster mushrooms, but it has to be at really low concentrations, and you probably burn more oil than you eat making the spawn.  Natural bacterias eat oil too and they are everywhere.

Regarding Paul, he is a great salesman and ambassador, and he has gotten a lot of people into mushrooms.    For that he deserves to be held in high regard.  He is pretty cool in person.  I do think he probably oversells his products, and that medicinal mushrooms shouldn't be sold as medicine until they are proven to work.  Turkey tails have been proven to work (but not very much), and the rest of them are pretty much untested in large clinical trials.    Mushrooms do make excellent placebos.

If you ask professional mycologists about Stamets or mycoremediation or medicinal mushrooms, they typically change the subject pretty quick, if they are feeling polite.

There are a ton of people doing mycoremediation trials, but almost no one scaling it up to solve real world problems.  Every idealistic first year college mycology student wants to save the world with mushrooms, but by the time they get a PhD they are thinking very differently.

Tradd Cotter and Peter Mccoy are doing a lot of work with mycoremediation, but I notice that they are mostly making their money writing books and giving workshops/lectures rather than actually doing it.    But they probably answer their emails and would be excellent people to talk to about details and new ideas.

Prettt much this.  I know someone who works at an actual soil remediation company.  They use GM bacteria and yeast.  And pretty much never do in situ remediation.  Toxic soil is removed and treated off site.

Anecdotally, a mushroom farmer friend did a few trials on mycofiltration and found the myceliated straw did a worse job than the control straw...

Which should be pretty intuitive to anyone who has ever wprked with straw logs, the mycelium is not very permiable to water.  Which makes it an excellent sheet mulch in the garden btw.

If you're looking for a good practical application thats something ive never seen written up.  Old straw logs turned into sheet mulch, keep weeds down and reduce watering needs, plus adds organic matter eventually.

Straw can also be buried, but as i found it nice to see, the oyster mushrooms need to be cleaned off the straw and the soil :frown:



I read that spent oyster straw could be used to grow blewits. Anyone has tried it? Should I build a pile of that straw and compost it, right?

Aspergillus niger I believe?

But yea other than that I should still have some bacteria that can remediate halogen compounds.

I have looked into the possibilities of bioremediation of asbestos, but after some research concluded that it wouldn't be a viable plan like most things.
Maybe we have some more GM to do..

Shrooms in the oyster family have a very good track record in bioremediation projects, they are really good at breaking down hydrocarbons, Stamets wrote of a highly successful project involving remediating soil contaminated with diesel and motor oil. I think there were even some successes with plastics.

Stamets hasn't done really anything with bioremediation. He's road on the coat tails of others tho. He just makes it look like he actually does science. He's a hack

Fungi are not very good at eating plastics or moving toxins.

I have a good culture of Tremetes Ochracea I would trade for something nice (gratitude is enough) from your trade list. It can withstand some fantastic extremes and seems to eat everything. This is a culture I started from wild spores collected in my yard. The mushrooms fruit on hardwood and keep growing all winter. The specimen I printed melted the polystyrene petri dish I did it in. I had to scrape plastic off to get spores onto agar. The original spore plate sprouted two types of mold that were easily overtaken and killed by the Tremetes myc.

This one could go in the mail tomorrow.



Keep on that hunt and keep me posted. Don't give in to nay sayers and skeptics. Everything exists. You can find it.

Why such a desire to shoehorn fungi into bioremediation when other candidates do much better and could actually use the attention.

If remediation is the desire put effort into means that actually have efficacy.

That's a bummer to hear mushrooms and bio-remediation isn't as golden as has been claimed. I was considering looking in to something in that line of work myself. Kinda silly in hind sight but I didn't think it was that popular of an idea. I guess with bio-remediation being one of Stamets highlights in his talks it's actually not surprising.

Thanks to all who posted info on people/companies actually doing/trying/researching this field, and the other, possibly more plausible, avenues like bacteria.

As for the "why fungi and not bacteria" question, Stamets aside, imho fungi is way less scarey than bacteria.

Bumbaclotjohnson good luck with your experiments. Looking forward to seeing your research when done.

Just thought I would revive this thread, I have been playing with the idea of higher fungi being used as a home water filtration system and the thought of composing that together with a bioremediation project is too enticing to leave this thread alone.

I have often thought about the possibilities that lie within pyrolysis and fungal filaments. I know that there has been research done with charcoal made from highly fibrous plant material such as hemp and stinging nettle. The material showed high surface area due to the plant structure and basically performed as activated charcoal without the need to impregnate it with solute and then remove them (the process for activating charcoal if I remember correctly). My hypothesis is that pyrolized mycelial growth will have even more surface area than fibrous plants due to the single cell structure of the smallest filaments. I would also add that depending on the pollutants in question, it may be possible to add specific metals or compounds to the substrate of the sacrificial mycelia in order to neutralize pollutants that otherwise would not be caught in the carbon matrix. This is evident in bonechar filtration due to the potassium, calcium and magnesium residues allowing better filtration of certain fluoride compounds.

I would imagine that mycelia grown for this purpose would possibly be more cost effective than other avenues.

I have also thought about living mycelial filters but this seems more applicable to small scale (home filtration for example)

Some fun ideas for additives to substrates to induce better absorption rates would be  aluminosilicates such as bentonite clay, or even synthesized molecular sieves, or possibly isolated antinutrients such as phytic acid (though regrettably I can't say whether phytic acid would bind to pesky contaminants as well as it does to useful nutrients, though I imagine its site specific and contaminant specific).

However all of this is theoretical and I'm no expert in such things, but I love exploring the idea. I just felt that this thread had looked over the possibility of pyrolized fungi (fungal biochar) in lieu of living fungal material.

The results of the experiment were pretty indecicive.
Basically I grew various fungi one WBS, at full colonization I loosely packed the fungi into there own clear tube each of which was 2 inch diameter by 2 feet long (this was the filter).

Allowed the fungi to recover and the result was a healthy growth in all counts.

Using a steel rod i poked a hole down the middle of each filter to allow better penetration :blush:

At this point the experiment went as planned and I had mushroom filters that allowed water to flow through evenly. :thumbup:

***The hypothesis was If lead nitrate contaminated water was run though a mycelium "filter" then afterwards there would be less lead nitrate in the filtrate (stuff that comes out of filter). My institute does not have a mass spectrometer so I had to use other means to test for the presence of lead. To do this I reacted the filtrates with potassium iodide which in the presence of lead 2+ reacts to form a bright yellow precipitant. *****It is a very distinct reaction but the lowest level it is visible at is 700ppm which is still pretty high up there. ****** So my starting concentration was 3.31PPT
and the lowest I could test was 700PPM

Results in a nutshell
some fungi like p. ferulae and aspergillus niger were able to reduce lead levels below my test threshold of 700ppm after 15 minutes of exposure.

most had no effect

I wonder if it has more to do with the mycelial architecture than the fungi itself when it comes to aspergillus doing something. Theyre ions so its not like they get mechanically trapped unless its a reverse osmosis filter. Beats me i guess

Oddly enough Bod Lead has a tendency to persist in solid environments as opposed to air and fluid environments from which lead will just drop out. So all in all it could have been that property of lead and the high concentrations I used that produced the results. When I do it again next fall I will have a mass spectrometer so Ill be able to get legit results. Also with that machine I can test with trace levels as opposed to 3 parts per thousand. either way it was a good test of concept experiment.
