The results of the experiment were pretty indecicive.
Basically I grew various fungi one WBS, at full colonization I loosely packed the fungi into there own clear tube each of which was 2 inch diameter by 2 feet long (this was the filter).

Allowed the fungi to recover and the result was a healthy growth in all counts.

Using a steel rod i poked a hole down the middle of each filter to allow better penetration :blush:

At this point the experiment went as planned and I had mushroom filters that allowed water to flow through evenly. :thumbup:

***The hypothesis was If lead nitrate contaminated water was run though a mycelium "filter" then afterwards there would be less lead nitrate in the filtrate (stuff that comes out of filter). My institute does not have a mass spectrometer so I had to use other means to test for the presence of lead. To do this I reacted the filtrates with potassium iodide which in the presence of lead 2+ reacts to form a bright yellow precipitant. *****It is a very distinct reaction but the lowest level it is visible at is 700ppm which is still pretty high up there. ****** So my starting concentration was 3.31PPT
and the lowest I could test was 700PPM

Results in a nutshell
some fungi like p. ferulae and aspergillus niger were able to reduce lead levels below my test threshold of 700ppm after 15 minutes of exposure.

most had no effect

I wonder if it has more to do with the mycelial architecture than the fungi itself when it comes to aspergillus doing something. Theyre ions so its not like they get mechanically trapped unless its a reverse osmosis filter. Beats me i guess

Oddly enough Bod Lead has a tendency to persist in solid environments as opposed to air and fluid environments from which lead will just drop out. So all in all it could have been that property of lead and the high concentrations I used that produced the results. When I do it again next fall I will have a mass spectrometer so Ill be able to get legit results. Also with that machine I can test with trace levels as opposed to 3 parts per thousand. either way it was a good test of concept experiment.
