LSD ans political views
    #25679885 -

Does LSD alter your political views? I am thinking that because acid is associated with the hippies, who have liberal views, this might have to do with the effects of the drug. What to you guys think? Do you guys know people who have done acid and they are conservative?

i'm more liberal myself, but i think you might have the cause and effect backward - people who are more liberal tend to be more open to new experiences and ideas, which means they're more likely to try psychadelics. (and partly because they're more likely to learn that they're pretty harmless compared to other drugs, and even beneficial, while being nonaddictive.)

that said, psychadelics tend to alter peoples personality, in the openness to new experiences category. hardly surprising, since they open up a whole new exciting world and make you feel more alive than normal - once you get a taste of how grand the unknown can be, you tend to crave it more. suddenly your typical routine seems much more cramped than it used to be.

i imagine this is a large part of the healing power they possess - they open your mind to new ways of seeing the world and doing things, so they help you get past any ruts in your life. that deep chasm of a past trauma that you cant move past suddenly becomes a tiny crack you can easily step over, or you can fly around it, build a bridge, or simply walk around it.

Acid, or any psychedelic, broadens the context. Id imagine it would change perspective with implications including a change in political views one way or another. I’d imagine most psychedelic users lean left or are libertarians, with exceptions, of course. I know plenty of conservatives who are socially progressive and fine with weed/psychedelics.

The Republican Party in the US is going to be in trouble in a decade or two if they don’t accommodate changing public opinion about weed / psychs. It’s time to get sane about this stuff and parse the situation in a more nuanced manner.

Well, that is what Timothy Leary believed. More recently, researchers at Imperial College London found that taking psilocybin can change people's political perspectives.
"The team also observed a change in scores for the Libertarian-Authoritarian questionnaire, with the extent to which volunteers agreed with authoritarian statements dropping off. This, say the researchers, could indicate a shift towards a more libertarian political perspective, with the effects apparent several months after treatment."
Would LSD have the same result? That's a good question.

Sort of lends credibility to McKenna’s old ideas, eh? That regular mushroom use kept powerful egos in check and allowed for cooperative and nurturing societies in lieu of the “mine, mine, mine” type of default many human beings seem to have in their absence.

Acid made three things seem preposterous to me: social conservatism, religion and taking myself too seriously.

But to each their own. The left tends to whine too much and never fails to shoot itself in the foot, reasoning from emotion rather than logic despite the validity of fundamental liberal values. I think both right and left could use some more consciousness, the state this country (and the world) is in right now.

Less hypocrisy, less unexamined opinions, more standing for something truly human, real, tangible, with an attentive eye to the future and the coming challenges.

The cortisol flooding the discourse and bitter, vitriolic amygdalas are too much.

I’m a fiscally conservative Libertarian, and have been since before I started using psychedelics about seven years ago. I don’t think psychedelic use has changed my opinions, but it has forced me to question them. In fact, I am hardly confident that I understand anything at all. I feel perpetually stuck in the Dunning-Kruger effect, in the trough on the other side of “Mt. Stupid.” So if anything, perhaps shrooms (I haven’t tried LSD) have made me more open to the idea that I’m wrong about any given thing.

Holy shit. I’ve heard TMK say that before, but I was speaking from my own experience (and, I believe, not simply paraphrasing an idea that he planted), and it’s uncanny how similar those two statements are.

  It fucking reeks.
Life comes at us in wave form and waves rise and fall for eternity. Maybe.

I was always liberal and after pshys I'm still very liberal. I think it's mostly because we demand the right to choose what we want and how we do it. When you want that kind of freedom it's hard to be conservative in the face of a greed based system. Because if I want something then Joe blow gets access too.
Also who the fuck am I to tell you what to do.

I don't feel that it did for me.  I was a libertarian before taking and still was a libertarian after taking.  Over a decade I have changed a bit and am more of an independent now.  Because I don't believe in the libertarian idea that we should pay no taxes, but I still think all drugs should be legal.

Yeah I 100% agree with you there.  They ARE supposed to be the party of less government, states rights, more freedom.  But they only pick and choose which issues they agree on.  They need to be consistent and end the drug war and let the states decide what should be legal.  Btw they're currently using a loophole to make substances illegal with the commerce clause.  Three supreme court justices have said that the government doesn't have the right to make a substance illegal based on the commerce clause of the constitution.

The last case to challenge the Controlled Substances Act was in 2005 and the judge said this, which I find interesting.

"For now, federal law is blind to the wisdom of a future day when the right to use medical marijuana to alleviate excruciating pain may be deemed fundamental. Although that day has not yet dawned, considering that during the last ten years eleven states have legalized the use of medical marijuana, that day may be upon us sooner than expected. Until that day arrives, federal law does not recognize a fundamental right to use medical marijuana prescribed by a licensed physician to alleviate excruciating pain and human suffering." - Judge Harry Pregerson

And a Supreme Court Justice said this, which I 100% agree with...

"If the Federal Government can regulate growing a half-dozen cannabis plants for personal consumption (not because it is interstate commerce, but because it is inextricably bound up with interstate commerce), then Congress' Article I powers – as expanded by the Necessary and Proper Clause – have no meaningful limits. Whether Congress aims at the possession of drugs, guns, or any number of other items, it may continue to "appropria[te] state police powers under the guise of regulating commerce." - Justice Thomas

The political elite on both ‘sides’ are performing a clever theatrical psyop designed to divide the masses to manageable subgroups and ensure the elite remain in control. If you feel like you align with either party you’ve been douped. It’s obvious when you look at the big picture. Many of our presidents have been practically related their families are so closely connected. On both sides.

It’s cute though that kids have fallen for the liberal agenda to grab their votes via the media, Hollywood and pop music. And even cuter to equate psychedelic use with being liberal!

I am conservative in the sense that I want the government to stay out of my business and everyone else’s. I guess I’m liberal in that I’m not religious and I don’t have a problem with abortion, homosexuality, or responsible drug use.

Re: LSD ans political views [Re: mendocino_beano]
    #25710687 -

i mean... if you want to protect personal freedoms, you kind of need the government to be in your business... because a heck of a lot of people won't hesitate to stomp on your personal freedoms otherwise.

i'm not sure what i'd qualify as other than sensible, myself. obviously, i want whatever maximizes people's happiness, otherwise what's the point of a government if it's not serving the people? but i also want the most cost effective methods, because if that moneys just being wasted, thats a lot of cash that could've gone to further improve happiness.

im in support of laws that control things that can be dangerous, but only to the point it minimizes the risk and maximizes the rewards. i could see age limits for shrooms being sensible, as well as warnings for people who are taking certain medications or have a history of schizophrenia. i don't support jail time for breaking drug laws/drug abuse, because it just punishes the offender instead of trying to address the problems that led them there in the first place. counseling and other measures seem much more productive to me.

i do support things like gun control laws, because lets face it - america has a SERIOUS gun problem. when you look at places like japan you can see guns for masses aren't needed for a safe society, and when australia enacted their own gun control laws, mass shootings dropped drastically overnight. sure, people will still do violence with things like knives... but lets face it, as messy as knives are and potentially crippling, they aren't as effective at killing as guns in general.

heck, i support auto-pilot for cars ASAP. cars are ridiculously deadly, and the sooner we get people to give their control over to robots, the better. sure you might not be able to drive a car yourself except on a race track or something, but hey - now you can read or play games while riding to work! sure, computers may occasionally mess up and kill someone, but at a rate that's orders of magnitudes lower than humans...i think ill take my chances with HAL.

i think people are afraid of giving up control and trusting others to do whats right, and that's understandable - but paranoia and resistance is going to get you the same thing as they would when tripping - a bad bad time. you gotta let go and flow with the times before you can alter its course to something better. resistance is as simply futile as trying to turn back an oceans tide.

i'm sorry, but what? that's like saying "criminals don't listen to the law, so laws are useless!" the fact is that the law isn't going to perfectly stop every crime in its tracks. that's a nice goal to aim for, but it's not going to happen. that doesn't mean it's useless. just like how vaccinations aren't 100% proof against a virus, doesn't make them useless to prevent outbreaks of disease.

if a governments corrupt, then that needs addressing. that doesn't mean that government is bad, it means that your particular government fucking sucks and needs fixing.

what would happen if governments disappeared overnight? mass chaos, then people would start trying to cooperate with each other, coming to agreements, deciding that they're going to do this thing a certain wa...oh wait, that's a new government in the making.

you simply can't not have governments if you have a society. all governments are, are a contract between the masses.

as the saying goes, don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. (unless you really really hate babies.) a corrupt government needs addressing, just as do ineffectual laws. (or lack of regulation.)

define corruption. if you mean corrupt as something as simple as "a politition lied sometime in our countries history about whether he dyed his hair or its his natural hair color, i dunno what to say other than get over it. if you mean systematic corruption that has large negative impacts on the populace, i suggest you look into places like denmark which have low levels of corruption and extremely high happiness index values.

im not denying the US has a corrupt government, especially currently. i wouldn't say its irredeemably corrupt yet, however. i certainly wouldn't say we should do away with all governments because ours is corrupt, because that's a statement in absolutes, and nature abhors absolutes as much as she does a vacuum. she loves "close enough"s though.

if you don't like what our government has become, the answer isn't to do away with government, its to fix the damn problem. call your local representatives, stage protests, rile up the populace to do something, get new bills on the ballots for votes, like Michigan recently did to try and fix gerrymandering. not everything will work, but thats fine. at least you're trying to deal with the problem, and lessons will be learned from any mistakes made.

life is all about balancing the actions of destruction and creation. wanton destruction is simply death. wanton creation is simply a tumor. what worked yesterday won't always work tommorrow. if you want a government thats resistant to corruption, it needs to be a living government, constantly tearing down what doesn't work anymore and adapting new laws to fit changing times. if you get complacent, or simply rail against a broken government, well...

it aint gonna fix itself.
