Indoor Green house set up !
    #2567653 - 04/16/04 02:21 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

A few people have asked about my fruiting chamber, so this is it.
Please ask any questions you are unsure of, and I will try to awnser.

I'm a person that likes to use what they have, rather than
buy in stuff, and only buy what I really need.

To start, the green house (gh) was ?16 in a sale in robert dyas U.K.
And is 165 cm tall, with four shelfs, 45 cm deep and 70 cm wide.
The propergator base I already owned, as I also did the air pump.

The propergator came with its own lid, but this is stored for now, instead, I using the GH as a large lid of sorts.

It is a pretty good propergator, adjustable temp, with built in
thermostat, and deep enought to hold 2" of perlite, in a water tight bowl, to which I add 1 gallon of tap water with 20 ml of 17% h2o2 and a table spoon of table salt. This helps keep the humiderty were I want it, and
also raises the temp of that of room temp.

As the two are of differing size, I'm able to pull the squirt of the GH
over that of the propergator base, making most of the condensation
run back into the base.

The outside I gaffa tape (duct tape us ? ) to seal, leaving
only two places for run off condensation to escape, just at the bottom of the zips, were I place two bowls to catch it.

For air exchange I add an air line from a fish rank bubbler, which is
filtered inline, and also in the large hole in the jar top.
And placed onto the top shelf of the GH. This is done
as the base isnt air tight, and means air escapes at the bottom of the GH
So pumping fresh air into the top, enables fresh air to reach the whole GH.

As a filter material, I use polly fill. Here it is stuffed tightly into a sperm sample jar  with air in one end, and out the other.
This works well, and you need to change the polly fill once a month, and you can see how much it has actually filtered out the air, as it gets dirtyer the older it is (like some people i can think of  )

Hope this awnsers most of the questions, but I feel I'm ramberling, so I'll leave it there for now.

If you can see in this pic, the plastic skirt (bottom of the GH
fits inside the bowl of the prop tray, so any condensation drips
back into the perlite layer in the bowl.

Heated plant propergators are just water tight trays, with
heat cables in, some have thermostats for temp, some dont.

Most are like this ^
But mine is more like this

Mine was ?2 at a car boot sale  but I think normally one
that size is about ?40 new.

What do you reckon as to the heated propagoter being replaced by a tray of water with a fish tank heater in it? Too weedy?

hey loki !

i got a little question concerning the "propergator" ur using.

i understood, that it is heating the wet perlite inside it and since
warm air rises, it heats up the whole greenhouse.
but the question is, the air will be 'cooled' by the other air and the
surrounding of the greenhouse, so i guess u will have to have a somehow
higher temperature in the propergator than u actually want to archive
am i right about this fact?

and if so, how high is the temp at the propergator set to?

peace ohm

Well, the room temp is 70, the interior of the fruiting chamber is 75.
This means the air being pumped in is cooler, which allows it to drop down, and spread throughout the chamer. Condensation is were the
plastic outer is at room temp (70) and the interior is (75) so the moisture builds on the inside.

This model propergator, on full power, containing 1 gallon of water, seems to hold at a very steady 75?f, with the air pump on 24/7.

This is a lucky balance for me, and also means I'm able to lower
the fruiting chamber temp. But with the presant equipment, I'm not able to get the interior temp above 75?f, which is not a problem that needs solving.

This set up could be achieved with a fish tank heater and a large bowl
of water, I'm sure, as any heater + thermostat could be adapted for
this use.

good advice... a waterbed heater or a sealed reptile heat rock would also work well

   Thank you Loki!

Excellent pictorial too. =]

I'm still surprised of the fact that the propergator alone is enough to keep the humidity up for that huge green house.
Any idea what the average RH is in that setup?

My GreenHouse has a humidifier for RH, but this thread has given me some awesome ideas, thanks Loki.
