Livestock and pens * 2
    #25674706 - 12/12/18 02:30 PM (5 years, 1 month ago)

I built a nice chicken coop over the summer. It's 90% finished. I have fencing for a large free range playground.

I haven't started the pig pen yet. I am only going to have 2 pigs. I don't think the pen would have to be too complex. I am going to slop them fat in the early spring and have them butchered by fall.

I think I need to focus on feeding bins too.

I will post some pictures.

Edit:

Here is my chicken coop in the making. I will be getting my chickens in March. The same for the pigs.

This is the unfinished shell. I am going to make their inside really nice.

Edit: got my black australorp pullets.

I am fencing them in a wooded area, but I am going to free range them like crazy. I have a fenced in potato field that I want then to protect from beetles.

This is the place where I am about to build a pig pasture. It is a pretty big oval shaped pasture with one part, as you can see in the picture, that has a low spot for summer mud bathes.

Edit:

Got goats for milking. And a male.

Make sure u give the pigs plenty of pasture .right now is the best time to plant clovers if you plan on getting pigs in late spring and wont cost as much to raise and alot better meat. put them up a wk and a half or so before slaughter n feed them a organic sweet feed with alot of molasses  will be best pork to ever cross ur lips .  I really like a Hampshire cross or a Yorkshire cross . There nicer normally and very efficient comes to money in versus meat out . they take bout 8months to get a 350 400 pound hog .If big pigs scare u go with mulefoot or American guinea hog they just take 1yr 18 months to reach kill weight . What kinda chickens you got ? We raise bresse , absolutely love them they free range and take pretty good care of themselves without getting eatin by foxes and hawkes lost 5 in 4 years and theres alot of foxes. You got any pictures of the new house ? I bn building a 8x8 shed out of scrap 2x4s and plywood i got from another job so far 0 dollars into it  im stoked .

What do you mean by plant covers?

I should be buying feeder pigs, correct?

Clovers and alfalfa , buckwheat  google cover crops for pigs . With wat u have in those picks. id fence in the woods and little bit of pasture chance are theres alot of nut bearing trees  which is wat the best tasting pork in the world is raised on . It makes it so much cheaper and efficient on u if theres stuff they can eat that u dont have to buy. Hell i ride around town and find apple trees and other fruit trees that they dont harvest and ask land owner if i can pik up . In 20 years only had 1 person tell me no .
I love the coop . With the chickens where your in the woods ur gonna have a issue with predators  so make sure u get a breed thats more feral (bresse, game, pedencia ,...) . The bresse is my favorite supose to be best tasting chickens in world their meat marbles like beef . My opinion they taste like chicken but are hella free rangers . i really like our guineas too  but if someone pulls up there loud i mean loud .
Something ive really got into here lately is the jumbo coturnix quail the damn things lay a egg everyday and grow to a pound in 8wks and are delicious. the biggest advantage is i can kill and clean 20 in less than 40 minutes . It takes a good 30minutes to clean 1damn chicken .

Also feeder pigs are wat u want but i prefer one who was raised on pasture and not a factory farm . The ones from big farms are not used to having to forage for food and normally have more health problems . Make sure if u buy a male he has bn cut unless ur wanting a boar  i prefer females there normally leaner, faster growing , and have less health issues . Just my experience

I saw what state you reside in from another post. I reside in the same state. I can tell you from experience from March to May bears can be a potential problem to any livestock if you live in area that has bear activity. There is not much feed available at that time of year so bears are looking for any easy meal. I lost a pig & 2 rabbits to one last year. I had a hinged window on my pig shed & it ripped it off crawled into the pig shed killed one of my pigs dragged it out through the way it got in. It tried to get through the door but it held up so it went through where the window was. I would keep them penned up at night.

Put u up a electric fence it hits the bear  and they wont come back and is also the easiest fence to build for pigs u just have to train them to it . Slso if possible use a solid state charger if possible like the silver streak. The solar ones will work but dont hit nearly as hard . We just had 9 baby piglets (American guinea hogs ) Tuesday . Also if possible fence in some of the woods the pigs love acorns, chestnuts, persimmons, etc . It will save on ur feed bill and make alot better meat .

Did have an electric fence(solar) for the outside pen. It ripped the window section of the shed out & got in that way. I guess I should have had the electric fence go around the perimeter of the shed also.

Im just dealing with black bears here in the unicoi bear reserve yes our farm adjoins the reserve so there is plenty of them running around . Never had any problems with them and the livestock but they have broke in our smokehouse a couple times a few yrs back but i grew habeneros all around it and crushed all the peppers up and mixed with dawn and water and sprayed around it . Seemed to do the trick  so i do it once every year in fall right sfter we kill pigs. We also have a pit lab mix named river and a basset named squeki that runs around outside during the  day .

Look into rabbits. My girlfriend and I just purchased a rabbit that a breeder was nice enough to knock up with one of her bucks. Our Silver Fox just had kits the other night and I am already looking forward to the 9 week mark where I can eat them.

We just need to get another doe and a buck. Basically with 3 rabbits you can produce 300lbs of meat a year.

We tried rabbits years ago they do taste good but just way too lean for me i could eat a couple in a sitting n be hungry again in a hr or so and the cost to meat ratio just isnt to my liking . It works for some just not me. My favorite meat source we have on the farm is the jumbo coturnix quail i literally have  93 cents in a bird at kill time not counting the electric to run the incu or brooder so probably 1 to 1.15 per bird at kill time . Super hardy , super easy, and the females lay so many eggs they will make any chicken jealous. They are also great sellers or at least where i live . We sell right around 4 to 5000 birds every year . I cant hatch fast enough . Just a thought.

rabbits are worthless, you can starve to death eating rabbits, and too much trouble to process, the best homesteading meat is lamb, easy animals to live with, lighter on the land and good quality meat with enough fat to keep you alive, plus each animal can get you 80-100 pounds hanging weight of meat so you dont have to butcher everyday, chickens are a close second but are much more trouble to process into meat

as for predators, several big dogs seem to do the trick, we have pyrenees mixes at present, our dogs have never failed us once in fifteen years

Rabbits are not completely worthless from a permaculture standpoint. We have 6 rabbits now and are slowly building up lots of raised bed ready fertilizer for our plants this season. Their poop is gold for plants basically.

Rabbits are definitely going to be lean but if you can cook with fat like the Inuits do with fish and seal blubber, you will be fine.

no animal is completely worthless, but as livestock rabbits are a liability, most people dont have too much whale blubber lying around, you almost never see rabbit meat offered around the world, in countries where livestock is survival you dont find rabbits, quite seriously you are better off eating rats
