Can someone introduce me to The Dead??
    #2566553 - 04/16/04 03:01 AM (19 years, 11 months ago)

I've never heard the Grateful Dead before in my life, but I am finally going to purchase a CD.

I need suggestions on which one to buy first!

Anyone?

I'm not sure about this but I dont think you can get their live performances on cd's, their live performances are appearantly what its all about, check out, www.gdlive.com, there you can download all their live acts for free, most people reccomend their shows from the year '77... hope I helped.
Thats how I "got started on them"...
Well, I didnt really get started on them, I dont really see what the big deal is about them, lol, dont expect something AMAZING like alot of people make them out to be here, they are good, but not amazing, well this is only my opinion ofcourse.

easy album to get into is "Skeletons from the closet" it's all the songs that got played on the radio up untill 72, so the more mainstream songs, but still good. Then you'll explore the live performances  which you CAN get on cd. I suggest you get the album "live at the fillmore 2-11-69" or the album "live dead" to start with the live stuff. It's the early years, 68-69 era, a lot of good guitar work and whatnot.... then you can work up thru the late 70's.

another great album is Jerry Garcia's "Garcia" where he played all the instriments (except drums)... a lot of the songs from that album became some favorites over the years, with such great songs as sugaree, deal, birdsong, the wheel, loser, etc.

so get these albums
skeletons from the closet and Garcia (in the jerry garcia section most likely)
live dead (red cover)
live at the fillmore 2-11-69

if you have broadband, yes, you should get some from gdlive.com. I suggest these 4 songs
http://gdlive.com/shn/gd69-03-02.shnf/gd69-03-02d1t01.shn
http://gdlive.com/shn/gd69-03-02.shnf/gd69-03-02d1t02.shn
http://gdlive.com/shn/gd69-03-02.shnf/gd69-03-02d1t03.shn
http://gdlive.com/shn/gd69-03-02.shnf/gd69-03-02d1t04.shn
it's the first set from 69-03-02. Thiers a second set, but the recording is wierd on that... your going to need to install shnAMP in order to play them in winamp, or if you want to convert them to burn them to cd, read this post

good luck :gd_icon:

If your wanting to buy a CD get one of the Dicks Picks series. Get something from the 68-78 era. Go to www.dead.net and click the Dicks picks icon. You can also get them at any record store.

If you want to download something go to the links someone posted above. They have a great selection.

The key to the Dead is to get live music. PM Ripple and see if he has any Shroomery picks left. he'll set you straight on the path.

Gr8fulJ420 is right (see Vulture's Guide thread), the featured show from '72 on this site is pretty amazing. Download and burn it if you can. It's intended as free, and is better than the Dick's Pick's I have...besides, listening to songs all from the same show is always nice .
Edit: Oops, this post was all kinds of retarded.

From a purely listeners point of view, GD has gone through many different kinds of musical influences. The older it is, generally the more 'bluesier' it is, and the newer stuff, gets more 'jam friendly' and 'trippier' sounding in general. I dont know, my first dead show wasnt until '87. My favorite years personally, are 72-77, with 76 being my favorite. Basically the 70s were the best, but towards the late 70s and early 80s, you could hear in their music that they were using cocaine.. I only know so much about the history, but thats what I can hear in their music.

If you want to start with studio stuff, I would suggest this compilation called 'so many roads'. I think thats all studio. Its a 5 cd compilation. I actually found this at my local library, brought it home, and burned it up rite away. This album seems to span all of their different sounds, and has music ranging 30 years. It has the blues songs, and the 20 minute long jams also.
I must say, out of all the studio albums I've listened to though, Shakedown Street will always be my favorite.  :gd_icon:
