What's wrong with my cakes? (not pinning)
    #25671782 -

Hi guys,
so I have 5 cakes in my SGFC, 3 of them have been there for 15 days, the other 2 for 8 days.

All 5 have been consolidating a week after full colonization.

I've been misting and fanning 3 times a day, I know I should do it when it's needed but it's my first time and I'm learning to recognize a dry cake.

Some of the cakes have developed "balls" of mycelium, I've read on the forum that it may be caused by high RH so I'm misting and fanning 2 times a day.

The light is 6500k and is on 12/12. No signs of contamination, just the mycelium growing "balls" and "thorns".

What do you think I'am doing wrong?

Go buy a new tub, and throw the SGFC in the trash. Put a wet towel on the bottom of it, put the cakes on top of foil on top of the towel. Spray the sides down a few sprays all around. Then put the lid on the tub upside down, put a lamp on top of it keep it on for 12 hours and off for 12.

I just did this with my first grow with 6 cakes. Currently have 35 pins/good size mushrooms. Literally minimal effort.

Adding something else, those cakes look incredibly dehydrated. Everything in there looks super dry.

Edit 2: Fanning does nothing. Don't fan. That is old outdated information.

Wtf?! This is absolutely HORRIBLE advice.  A wet towel in a tub? Sorry.. but GTFO.  That is not recommended in any way, shape, or form.  A wet towel is just going to mold in the tub.

Please don't give advice if you don't know what you're talking about. And you obviously do not... again. I'm sorry, but that is some extremely poor advice.

Anyways...

OP, definitely stick with the SGFC.

Do you have holes on the bottom of that tub as well as the other 5 sides?

Is the tub at least a foot or two from any walls?

The tub isn't in a closet or something that is restricting natural airflow around the tub?

All of these things can lead to high RH. I agree is looks like you have too high of humidity and are not getting enough FAE (Fresh Air Exchange)

Oh I'm sorry have you tested this for your self? Have you actually tried with a wet towel to see if you have any idea what so ever that you are spewing at me?

Don't call it horrible advice if you haven't even tried it. SGFC are out dated. There's no reason to put a million holes into a perfectly good container.

Did your cakes start out looking like that after your dunk and roll? Or did the myc grow more after?

The SGFC has holes on all the sides, it's in the center of the room.
But before 2-3 days ago it was on a desk  on 4 supports, the bottom was at 5cm(2inches) from the desk . Now it is on the grid that you can see in the pic that is well over 2ft from the ground.
Can this be the reason for the cakes not pinning?
Should I mist more to rehydrate them?

Thanks for the help

Yup. Been there and done that. We called it a poor man's terrarium years ago. Standing water in a tub is bad enough when it comes to  inviting mold and bacteria.  A towel would be even worse as it would mold that much faster having the towel to grow on.  Then you also have ZERO air flow which mushrooms need. It's just not a good idea.

YOU'RE advice is out dated, not mine.  Also, what makes you think you can decide which advice and methods here are outdated and which are not?  How long have you been around here? Experience? You're definitely not a Trusted Cultivator.. I read about the method you're mentioning back in 2010 and it wasn't any good then no it's not now.

OP can check my "resume" through my profile and decide whose advice he wants to follow.  We can also wait for someone even more experienced than me to chime in, which I think would be best. The more minds the better.

Starting to think that you are tripdawg on a different account  :blowjob:

I'm curious how you think that a wet towel with fresh air will mold faster than wet coir?

Dude it looks dry as fuck in there. Myceliums matted and dry. It looks like he has too much fae and not enough humidity. I agree tho, fuck the towel. Use wet coir if u don't wanna use perlite.

Coir over perlite of course. But his cakes have already been in there for 15 days. I have tried perlite, coir, and a wet towel, and the towel has produced the most humidity by a land slide. If the myc isn't growing onto the towel, then the mold most likely wont.

But over all OP you can tell by looking at your first picture. How the bottom of your perlite looks wet but the middle to top is dry. You're cakes are drying out. And a SGFC with all those holes just makes the issue worse. SGFC's can work fine but you have to soak the shit out of that perlite.

What your room temp?

Make sure the perilite is wetted out to full field capacity.

Stop misting, and forget about fanning all together. When you see the balls as you mention, crack the lid, but otherwise leave it alone. When the perilite is providing the humidity, unless you are in an extremely dry climate (forced air heat comes to mind), misting really isn't need in my experience.

You might want to consider a dunk and roll on the 15 day cakes. It can't hurt, and it might just jump start them. I've had good luck with this on cakes that didn't seem to want to pin.

Rough year for Sauber f1... if that's what your handle references.

I don't know precisely the room temp, I don't have how to measure it right now. Climate is not dry and there isn't an air flow in the room.

Perlite has 15 days but now it's still wet.
Yes it's Sauber F1

Lol. So much text and it's hard picking out what sentences I'm looking for my phone. Mich bad.

As far as it looking dry, ehhh idk. To me that mycelium looks like its reaching out in spots which tells me too high RH. I don't see any blue from drying. That's just my first opinion here.

I forgot to point out that I bought two bags of perlite, one of them was darker but now both are wet

I use a humidity chamber instead of the sgfc to fruit cakes.  Unmodified tub with lid cracked and wet coir in bottom to provide humidity.  Pins within 3 days like clockwork on fully colonized cakes.  Seems those new to this seem to have a lot of issues with the sgfc.

I recommend putting them in an HC.  Good luck
