Just mutants, theyre fun to clone. As long as they feel normal they should be good but if theyre soft or bruised dont eat as likely infection is the cause.

Those are outside though so infection is very unlikely unless its bugs. Most infections come from bad spawn.

Genetics, growth conditions, other microbes including bacteria are all variables that cause the growth you're seeing.

As far as the dark spots, those are infection sites. Let them finish out growing unless you see mold. No visible mold = it's bacteria and can be removed by cutting off and discarding the affected sites once you harvest. These things are to be expected when outside, having been handled, general unclean maintenance etc. Not really a big issue considering what already is.

One or two of the mushroom’s veils have torn- revealing the gills, but they are only about an inch and a half tall. That seems super short to be mature. Did they need more air or something or does this just happen to some?

Sounds totally normal for the amount of stress you've put them through. Go ahead and keep misting as needed, and watching for signs of poor FAE. You've got tons of mechanical and environmental stresses affecting the mycelium, which paired with poor surface conditions is going to lead to a non-uniform flush. Go ahead and snip them off at the base with clean, sharp scissors as the caps start to turn upward.

The photos you see of large thick canopies of mushrooms and heavy pin sets are the result of carefully curated genetics and well crafted surface conditions. You're likely going to be dealing with anywhere from 1 to a dozen mushrooms maturing in sync at a time, all in different shapes and sizes. It's less than ideal, but you're still learning, so just roll with it.

Keep an eye out for trichoderma, and just keep doing what you're doing until it shows up, at which point, you need to get the tub as far away from your grow environment as soon as possible. Be sure to take spore prints and clones from these early fruits, because they may be all you get before contamination gets out of hand. Good agar work can counter a lot of bad practices while you're still figuring them out.

Thanks for the insight guys, I ended up with a yield of around 18 grams dry. Not much but I was expecting one or two. And man they are powerful, 0.5 was enough for a rather strong evening.

That's a pretty nice little harvest. I personally would have let them go another 2 days at least (roughly when they would have the caps not quite turning up, but within a few hours of getting to that point) for more consistent potency and to facilitate spore printing, but you didn't lose any potency harvesting when you did. Good work.

What do you have planned now? Doesn't look like you took any spore prints. Did you make any clones?

Smaller immature fruit are stronger by weight IME... I like to grab them just before/after the veil breaks, I only let them open up for prints, and usually only leave a small cluster for this purpose

I meant to let one grow and take a print but I forgot. I’ve got some more spores in the mail, I’m going to use what I learned here to start up again, this time I’m going to try to do some prints and agar cultures. By the way, if I have a colonized agar Petri dish, how long can I store it before I need to do a transfer or use it?

Can store dishes in the fridge for a couple months,  depending on how thick you pour... drying out is your enemy... favorable cultures are best to slant for long term storage, and taken from small transfers to expand from for a year or 2

Hellyea man! Just gotta keep it more humid but your a shroom grower now!:grin:
It'll help to keep your caps from getting cracked an from getting infection cause when your myc drys to much an dies an you wet it mold will attack the dead myc.
