Monotub issues

Hey guys, so I've got one issue each with two different monotubs.
One tub is medium-sized, I prepped it using Bod's tek. Just coco coir and horse oats, no gypsum, no verm, etc. It's been sitting for weeks now, and has not colonized at all. When I checked it this morning it had mold growing on the coco coir. I'm not going to try to salvage i or anything, but I'm curious if anyone knows what may have caused it to not colonize at all.
The other tub did colonize, though it seems to have stopped colonizing before completely covering the top. There are white spots on the top of the cake (idk if you can call a mnonotub a cake), but there's also a lot of uncolonized coir. Again, same tek as the last one, just grain and coco coir. I've had cakes fruit like this before, but this one doesn't seem to be fruiting.
It's cold where I'm at and I keep a space heater on my tubs, with the temperature setting ranging from 74-80.

Tub one = bad spawn The two = unhealthy spawn

74-80 is too hot. 65-75 is what you want.
Also, your big problem is bad spawn.

Thanks guys! That was a pretty simple answer. I guess I'll read up on how to make sure my spawn is healthy in the future!
Also, I forgot since it's been a few weeks, but since bod mentioned it, I do recall the spawn for that first tub being somewhat questionable. I thought it might have been bacterial, but I decided to see if it would spawn anyway. I've done that before and had a very successful tub, but there's tons of variables at play here. Thanks again guys!

Pretty simple test for spawn is to shake monitor for recovery. After 24 hours it should all be stitched back together (hold upside down and it's all a single mass). After 48 hours the myc should have visibly recovered. It gets easier to tell if your spawn is clean just by quick glance once you know what signs to look for. Wet spots, residue, sweat and other signs will be key indicators of clean spawn.

A lot of the time you can tell by taking a sniff of the spawn when you crack it open for the first time. If it smells sour or kind of like vomit/tomato instead of farinaceous it's most likely bacterial.
Also doing a 90-100% shake test to see how fast recovery is can be a good way to check your spawns health.

Thanks for the tips! I have a few jars at home that are ready, should I shake them to see how quickly they recover? Does breaking up healthy mycelium do any harm to it?

I would go ahead and shake them, yes. Also shaking the mycelium is indeed damaging it, but that is the whole purpose. You want to see how quickly it is able to repair and keep growing/colonizing. That gives you an idea of the overall health of your colony. A healthy jar will recover and "fuzz up" after approximately 36 hours. If your going on three days and haven't seen signs of growth that is usually a good indicator of week mycelium or some sort of contamination.

Ok, got it. I guess I should have been more clear-I was wondering if shaking them would do any permanent damage, or make the mycelium culture as a whole weaker with no chance of becoming stronger again, but it seems like that's not the case.

No permanent damage as long as you don't have weak ass mycelium on your hands! lol
