they're illegal in a few other states too (mostly in the southern latitudes for sure), but they can sell them as "novelty items". suggesting that they be used for sexual stimulation is a crime. some sex therapist or something in texas got arrested not too long ago for providing women with sex toys and suggesting that they be used as such.  :nonono:

This is true. IT was around this area as well. My brother told me about it. He got mad and said "if i want 8 dildos, i should be able to have 8 dildos! damnit!!" ... i agreed with him, but didnt care to have 8 dildos. lol... No, but it is very stupid that they make this a crime. What i dont understand is why they have xxx stores on the beach of mississippi... The govenor probably got scared and had to make a call for no sex toys.

They are also technically illegal in Texas as well. My brother used to work at a quasi record store that sold them along with "water pipes" and other paraphenelia. When he showed up one day, a few seconds after entering the store, he was raided by ATF, FBI, and local police. The law, as it turns out, doesn't go after the owner the of store, but the employee who sells it. The owner was responsible enough to at least pay his legal fees, but I think he still ended up on probation. He loves to tell people the story about how he was arrested for selling dildos.

This is fucking bullshit.

"I think it's a good law," said Paula Nevels, 50, of Vicksburg. "I think (sex toy use) leads to pornography and that leads to our children being exploited. I think a lot of it is perverted, anyway."

How can one argue against that "logic"?

What the fuck is their excuse for having this law on the books?

I mean, sex toys are illegal in Mississippi for no other reason than someone's bible told them they should be. I don't understand how anyone could not see this as legislated morality.

Freedom? Yeah right.

From an interview with Eric Schlosser; author of upcoming book on the black market in drugs and pornography.

DL: What was your reason for choosing the pornography industry as a facet of the black market to examine in your book?

ES: It is an interesting look at the huge triumph of the religious right in American society. It is far more powerful and prevalent than any other western industrialized nation, yet America also has the most hardcore porn. That is revealing of the huge contradiction in our culture that having this right-wing, Christian domination of so much of the culture breeds an obsession with sex in the most plastic and superficial way.

In a related story, Mississippi has proposed outlawing the human hand.

Seriously, I was born in Mississippi and they have made great strides in racial relations even though the media may portray a different picture at times. But it is still a very conservative state and very repressive of alternate lifestyles or views.

Think of it as the buckle in the bible belt.

I'm sure the right wingers would say that the reason why America still has so much hardcore porn is because there aren't enough right wingers and right wing ideas.

But Swami, if I asked a Mississippi politician why sex toys are a crime, what legitimate reason could he give me?

this just in:

the mississippi state legislature is controlled by democrats, the state's attorney general is a democrat, and until only a few months ago, the governor was a democrat.

They havent busted all the adult stores that are broadcast over the radio. But i think it is advertised as novelty. Regardless, they are in a lot of places. Is sodomy still illegal?

Yes it's bullshit. However the perfect example of no such thing as separation of church and state is, surprise surprise .... the Bill Of Rights.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;
All it says is Congress can not start or stop any religion.

As an Atheist I believe it should specify as complete as possible a separation, but any one who reads well at all can see there is no separation mandate.

Or perhaps they might just say that it's because most politicians are assholes.

There certainly is cultural dichotomy in America. Either you are a hedonist or a puritan and each side tries to shock the other as much as possible. Because the country is so polarized each pole pushes the other farther to the extreme. There isn't much of a middle ground and everything is in your face. Really reminds me of the Tao Te Ching.

That said, I don't really care if Missisipi outlaws sex toys. Seems silly but they have a right to do it. I don't think having sex toys is an essential human right. Sometimes I wonder why people make such a big deal about defending porn and other things. The stuff has no real value, it's not going improve anyone's life. I don't see why people defend it so vigorously.

I also don't think sex toys have anything to do with the seperation between church and state. Maybe people just don't like sex toys being sold and want to ban them. Who says that has anything to do with the Bible. And why the fuck do you guys have disciminate against people because of their values?
The church and state argument is a joke, it's people that want religion in the government vs. people that want aethiesm in the government. Both are belief structures to me, and anti-religion government is just the same as an anti-atheist government.

Because it's not the government's place to tell you how to live.

Maybe it does improve some people's lives. Who are you or anybody else to judge?
