Temp not constant, problem?
    #2566753 - 04/16/04 08:21 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Hey again,
I've decided to put my jars in the top part of a closet above (seperated by 1/2" thick wood) my 250w HPS light. The temp in there is just 80f. My problem is: The light is on an 18/6 on/off cycle, and temps will start to fall as soon as the light goes off. To counteract this to some degree, I intend to set up another timer with about 100w of bulbs to come on when the hps goes off. This will result in the temps looking something like this (guess):
7Am (1 hour after hps ON) - 80
building up to maybe 82-84 just before hps off at 1am
then gradually falling back to 70f by the time the hps is about to come on again.
Will this temperature fluctuation have negative effects on growth?
Thanks,
JohnnyJ

are the jars keept in a dark place while the lights will be on?
if any thing the temp changes will just slow colonization time down just a little.

Yeah, there are actually 2 seperate shelves above the hps.

The cfl's being closer to the jars and having only one "barrier" to go through should hopefully mean that the temp won't drop too much.

It sounds fine, and nothing to worry about.

cover the shroom box with blankets to buffer the heat gains and losses to the substrate. i.e. it will take heat up slower and loose heat slower too so stays about the same temp. your bulb idea is best though, just make sure they are in the dark if colonising

Yeah, I have the jars covered now, but only with a black basketball top, should I get something heavier?
I probably should, just to make sure it's fully dark and a blanket or something would be a better heat buffer.
How sensitive is mycellium to light, I presume it's ok to look at them, but should I make sure they are never in contact with bright light, or is it ok, provided it's only a short period of time?

Do you use some kind of filter? i've found with changing temps the pressure in jars changes also and will inhale and exhale unsterile air from the outside. this isn't a problem if you use a filter but if you only have an aluminum foil top, it could be a problem.

Peace

I have the standard layer of dry vermiculite, does that count?
One thing I was wondering about when I was inoculating my jars today:
What's to stop mold forming on the minute amounts of brf that get stuck in the dry layer of vermiculite when you are taking the needle out of the cake?

You should try and keep the temp as steady as possible or try and put some sort of filter over the holes. But you will probably be just fine BRF is pretty forgiving.

Peace

What sort of filter?
Some of that breathable tape stuff I've seen mentioned maybe?
