Marlboro maker places $1.8 billion bet on marijuana * 1

Marlboro maker places $1.8 billion bet on marijuana
www.apnews.com

One of the world’s biggest tobacco companies is diving into the cannabis market with a $1.8 billion buy-in.

Marlboro maker Altria Group Inc. is taking a 45 percent stake in Cronos Group, the Canadian medical and recreational marijuana provider said Friday.

The agreement includes a warrant to acquire additional shares over the next four years that could give the Altria, which is based in Richmond, Virginia, a 55 percent ownership stake in the Toronto company.

That would mean Altria’s investment would be in the same league as the $4 billion spent earlier this year by Constellation Brands to acquire shares of Canopy Growth Corp., another Canadian pot producer.

The August investment by Constellation, which makes Corona and other beverages, was the largest to date by a major U.S. corporation in the cannabis market.

Whatever hesitation larger corporations in the U.S. had about entering the cannabis market appears to be fading if there is a financial justification.

Altria’s huge investment lit up shares of cannabis companies that have begun to set up shop in Canada, where recreational use was legalized this year.

U.S. traded shares of of Cronos Group Inc. jumped 22 percent Friday.

Rapid growth in the cannabis market is expected to continue as legalization expands in the U.S. and social norms change. On Tuesday, ultra-conservative Utah became the latest state to legalize marijuana use for medical purposes.

Consumers are expected to spend $57 billion per year worldwide on legal cannabis by 2027, according to Arcview Market Research, a cannabis-focused investment firm. In North America, that spending is expected to grow from $9.2 billion in 2017 to $47.3 billion in 2027.

I hate tobacco. I remember when I was 15-16 years old and came to the realization that drug laws had nothing to do with keeping you safe or healthy. Because why would something like cigarettes which kill 400,000 Americans a year be legal while marijuana was illegal.
I will never buy any product from this cronos group knowing  that Malboro owns almost half the company. it's never going to happen but if everyone just refused to buy cigarettes these scumbag companies that profit from the death of others would dry up and die.
Bottom line fuck big tobacco.

This is what ive been fearing since like 1996 when cali started the whole MMJ thing.

Knew it was inevitable. Knew it would be marlboro.

Imagine their fucked up packs of joints with additives

There's a bunch of haters of big cannabis on ICMAG.

Personally, I'd like to see seeds in mass very cheaply.  These small pollen chuckers ain't gonna be able to do that.

I'd also like to see some regulation standards, DNA analysis when stating a strain is a strain.  Not this knock off shit.  Even though it's quite popular in the fem market.

If companies like marlboro can take over the legal weed trade, then id say it would have failed. Seems like its headed in the direction of big business. Heres hoping the small, devoted growers always stay on top

That would mean a giant like philip morris would be taking over. And i sure dont see many tobacco seeds.

It may become harder to get seeds or maybe DIY will be illegal like Washington State (but with legal sales). I hope seeds stop being considered schedule 1 when you order them

Small growers will have their culture and big biz theirs.  Thing is breeding has been all 'small' guys.  So who knows what big canna will breed.  Probably industrial shit.  Identical from seed, high fast yield, potent, mold reisistant.

Altria has also owned Kraft foods in the past, and currently owns about 25% of SABMiller and some wineries.

Tobacco is a steadily declining market and the smoking rate is consistently dropping at around 3% a year, and the company produces an enormous amount of cash because it doesn't need innovation, R&D, advertising or marketing departments. I have been a shareholder of Altria for over a decade and it will be interesting to see how it embraces a high growth segment into it's business lines.

It isn't the tobacco companies that are keeping the product flowing, but the senators and state tax revenue in N.Carolina, Kentucky and Virginia and a federal healthcare system that offloads the costs to the individual. Anti-smoking policies are extremely effective in reducing smoking rates, but there has been little appetite for them except for a few places like New York and California. For all of it's flaws tobacco is still a legal product like alcohol, fast cars, casinos, pornography and now cannabis.

It was only a matter of time until tobacco companies took stakes into cannabis companies and Altria group has been one of the best run businesses of the past century.

The trend of all farming has been towards larger businesses, more mono-culture crops that look and smell the same and are available year round. Whether it's apples or spinach, people expect to be able to get a consistent product from coast to coast. Big players were always going to take over and drive the price so low that the small guys couldn't compete on price. There will always be a market for the smaller local grown high quality farmer's market/craft beer crowd, but it will be a smaller segment.

Good.  Hope they realize home growing is a HUGE market and can make a killing off of $10 and $20 seeds.

Home brewing hasn't flooded the streets with beer.  Nor skyrocketed tommy gun shootings!

You can grow your own vegetables in your garden too, but most people don't figure it's worth the effort. Plus you need to wait several weeks from seed to product. Not exactly the lead time for a casual user.

But some people have great gardens that are top rate and it is a personal passion. The money isn't really a factor, but maybe they sell or give a small amount away on the side.

I'd ideally like to be ALLOWED to sell to reimburse grow costs.  That will be a cold day in hell for sure!

I grow veggies.  Freaking love tomato from the garden.  Grandparents grew potatos and those were great!

If more people knew the VALUE of a garden, they'd grow anything.  I can grow indoor weed for $0.75 a gram.  Black markets like $10 a gram and pretty much same at a store unless bulk.

Outdoor is easily $0.05 - $0.10 a gram.

This is good. There will be no budget to keep marijuana illegal anymore. And if you don't like Marlboro 420 blends then grow your own. It's so fucking eazy.

AND I'm only saying that cause there is danger at my door. I volunteer to get raided again so I can make another example of myself and further the legalization of marijuana again!

Is Altria Group Inc. worth dropping a few bucks in their stock?

Who here brews his or her own wine or beer? Who here grows his or her own cannabis? Who here grows his or her shrooms?

Wine and beer along with cannabis is legal in some places so do you still brew or grow your own or do you get it online or in the store?

Free drugs no taxes just the cost of growing so why pay ten times as much? Yet most people do just pay more then take the time to learn how to brew or grow.

Personally I think people who grow or brew their own drugs are generally more responsible in their actions then those who buy drugs on a whim. But I'm just a low down drug user so what the fuck do I know.

I like the idea of buying pre rolled marijuana cigarettes but I’m worried they will throw in nicotine into them. That would ruin it for everyone. They put too many chemicals into cigarettes. Nicotine in marijuana would ruin it. I won’t try it if it has nicotine in it.

Those criminals on ICMAG are loosing their cash cow and are whining. They are such a joke the morons believe they are the reason why cannabis was legalized in Canada that is like believing that moonshiners ended the prohibition of alcohol.

I take it moral guy does not grow cannabis because if he did he would know you can get thousands of seeds from just a few plants. And under Canadian law i can give anyone over the legal age 30 seeds and or four clones and or 30 grams of cannabis.  :ganja:

BTW The University of British Columbia did DNA test on legal cannabis out of 47 strains 30 were almost exactly the same. I have to laugh at people who buy pineapple express thinking its great weed because of the movie. Pineapple express is a weather event in BC Canada that lengthens the growing season creating more potent weed it was never a strain until some breeder took advantage.

Come to Canada legal cannabis can be bought in joint form and has NO tobacco or other harmful illegal chemicals in it.

I don't live in Canada and know that a lot of seed is easily produced.  But it's all gotta start somewhere.  Most folks growing around here probably do not have good seed.

Whenever a natural product gets massively corporatised in NA, it loses its connection to nature; just look at corn, tomatoes, meat products, etc. Nature doesn't produce nearly the same consistency and size of food as farmers do now. This looks like a continuation of a bigger issue to me but I'm probably just talking out of my butt.
