mystical experiences and brain waves..
    #2559296 - 04/14/04 12:47 PM (19 years, 11 months ago)

i was just watching daily planet a science show from canada. anyway they did studies on nuns. they tested there brain waves when they were praying and having expereince with god. they found the brain would have more delta waves. this was also true for other religous meditaton when they belived they had contact with god or whatever.

the experimenter was religous but he thougth a drug could give this experience. if they developed one. well i think there is a few already. and im sure we all know and love them.

Yes, many 'spiritual states' are in fact just a different wave length of thinking. Example: Escaping this world for the infinity of meditation .. But that been said, I think that all things 'religious' are not only achievable by 'altered' states, but rather through clarity of mind in the awakening reality we find ourselves in each day. The problem with using drugs to reach altered states is that one must ask: Is it real?? We have had this debate here much, but I do not think any one answer has been proven either way. I think with much understanding(again, how do we define understanding) one can interpret and use knowledge they gain while tripping or high, or whatever, and use it when perfectly sober, and see how it all ties in. If we base our experiences ONLY on altered states, how then can we say it is real? Only by combining your 'logic' on the matter, and tying it in with 'mystical' experiences you can begin to weed out fallacies and see something of what you think may be truth. Did I go too off subject?

Maybe those delta waves were indicative of sexual frustration. (I went to Catholic school with lots of nuns. Boy are they a bitter, angry group of people - in general.)

i have a friend name pam reynolds, and she had brain surgery, all fluids in her brain were drained, that means ZERO brain wave activity, and she had a near-death experience. There is nothing to contradict that she had this experience, there is no hallucination occuring in a dead brain is there?

as long as we dont mistake cause and effect...
a change in brain waves doesnt add or subtract from the percieved importance of the mystical state...

>all fluids in her brain were drained
>she had a near-death experience
-People training to be astronauts have these same experiences in the centrifuge. From personal experience, these experiences can be the result of fainting. Basically, something is happening in the brain as blood drains out of it that causes these states.

>no hallucination occuring in a dead brain is there?
-I'm not familiar with what you are saying... but the fact that she has memories indicates brain function.

What he is saying is that a 'dead' brain, one lacking of brain waves(which is what human thoughts produce) could not possibly remember something happening during this dead state if there was not some sort of conciousness after psyical ' death'

People training to be astronauts have these same experiences in the centrifuge. From personal experience, these experiences can be the result of fainting. Basically, something is happening in the brain as blood drains out of it that causes these states.

A few years ago some brain surgeons in Europe found a way to artificially produce an Out of Body Experience by stimulating a specific part of the brain electrically.

The part they were stimulating is thought to be used for personal spatial location information. In other words, it gives you the sense of "you" being inside your skull with the rest of your body extending below you. They thought that electrical stimulation of this part of the brain was causing it to be inhibited...resulting in a lack of the ability to judge where your conscious thought is "occuring" in reference to the rest of your body.

They patients they tried this on all had immediate OBE's and some even reported experiences that are normally refered to as Near-Death Experience.

The human mind is a strange thing. Different waves lengths are everywhere out in Space. Yes, even Space emits sound. So waves lengths of reality consciousness is everywhere to be found.

Remember how atoms viberate? Same kind of theory.

thanks, i was way too amused to say anything other than 'lol'

and to trendal, because the brain is stimulated they are considered to be "artificial", meaning unreal? They could be onto something, yes, but to say just because they can be stimulated doesnt make them just a hallucination. You will have to have one for yourself to understand this i guess, im way beyond thinking anything other than we are more than just our bodies, i dont even consider us our bodies at all.

The soul is obviously connected to our bodies, or else how would it know when to depart when our bodies arent functioning right(so bad that we cant live anymore; example: heart stopping). It can be stimulated no doubt, but that doesnt make it just a hallucination and when u have one you are not just inside of yoru skull, that is stupid.(you HAVE to have one to understnad, obviously, or else u sound silly not really knowing what your talking about). If you know that time doesnt exsist you can get an idea of how a 5 second stimulation here in the physical can be a seemingly 5 hour journey while out of body body where time doesnt exsist. There are levels in the astral that you can go to that have the white light NDE'rs describe, its what we really are, we are the light of god, its either your higherself, or a spirit guide, but the light is of god no matter where its coming from and u must be out of body to experience it in its fullest feel, your body would fucking explode at all the love ud feel. ive said more than need be. sorry.

I also heard of a study recently that consciousness was being linked to the EM fields emmitted by our brains...

The electrical impulses of nurves, so the entire nervous system emits a complex field, I think. Most of it is concentrated in the brain, though, and it has the most complex fields.
