Water content in monotub.... vs yield...
    #25663714 -

When I prepare my monotub substrate... what is a good percentage of my initial water content that I could reap as wet mushroom weight? You know, when you toss the old substrate after a few flushes, its so light and dry...

4 quarts of rye spawn, one brick of coir.... With a dunk or two sucking up a few cups of water, about a 130 oz of water total is in there. I suppose some loss to evaporation.

Could one get 60% of that in yield? Meaning about 7.8 ounces dry? If all went perfect?

That's not how any of this works. Lol generally u can estimate dry weight on spawn if all goes correctly. 4 qts of rye will on average give u 4oz dry. Pros can get way more, and beginners can completely fail. But 1oz per quart of spawn is the general consensus

Thats good to know. I ask, because it is also general consensus that adding water to the grow helps yield. I am asking for a goal to shoot for. One obviously couldn't harvest more mushrooms than there is water in there... so has someone harvested 70% of the water? See my thinking? Its a way of setting a goal for myself. But I don't know what is achievable. Of course not everyone is measuring the water they add....

I see what ur saying. But evaporation is a huge variable.

Yeah, I guess it is. I don't feel like weighing my tubs. My operation is running quite dry right now, in an attempt to hold off slight bacteria that is plaguing me. Funny, I'm still getting 4 ounces dry, but only one flush usually. I get mold at the first flush or just after. I know I can get more. Recently, in my mission to grow drier, I actually had misshapen fruits... because there wasn't enough water to grow them fully. At least I know my extremes now!

Sounds like you're looking to measure biological efficiency. We do that by dry weight in vs wet weight out. The water content should always be field capacity - as much as it can hold and no more.

but but but... one can use varying amounts of field capacity substrate. People with my amount of spawn sometime add two quarts of verm, expanding the water available. I'm using 2.75 quarts of water.... others use 4.5 quarts. Both at field capacity.

Does water availability have zero affect on the yield?

i use 1 brick 3 qts of verm and 5 qts water  5 qts of spawn per tub:thumbup:

so tripdawg420, (aaaaamazing handle BTW)

Whats your best yield with those amounts?

t

(BTW, I am using an actual gallon of spawn from a bag, which is equivalent to 5-7 quart jars, depending on how you fill them)

I work out my coir per brick based on 650g and the total required for the sub volume, so for example if I need 975g which is 1.5 bricks x 3.75 = the amount of water in litres to add being 5.6lts works out great each time:thumbup:

Cool info. So 16 dry ounces is 160oz wet shrooms roughly.

5 quarts of substrate water is 160 ounces
5 quarts of grains might have 50 ounces of water

210 oz plus misting and dunking.

Maybe 220oz water total. (6.8 quarts)

You are running 1.4 quarts of water for every colonized quart of spawn (including the water in the spawn)... and getting 3.1 dry oz per quart of spawn. 70% of your water becomes wet mushrooms. I think this makes you very good at what you do.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I currently do ( at my best)

2.75 quarts of substrate water is 88
4 quarts of spawn has 40 oz

128 plus misting and dunking

maybe 140 oz water total

I am running 1 quart of water per colonized quart of spawn. And at best I get 1.5 dry oz per quart of spawn. 40% of my water becomes wet mushies.

This is such good info for me. I am just now rounding the corner of having clean spawn with bags (its been a long road) Now I can start pushing my spawn to substrate ratios and have a bit more water in my substrate (I've been running them dry cause I'm fighting bacteria/mold)

Thanks for sharing!

IME a really good culture can use around 80%-85% of the water in the sub first flush. That would be my goal.

I seem to be having difficulty getting the sub to suck up much of anything in a dunk. I'm lucky if it takes up a cup. (to be fair, im only sloshing it in the liner). I want a strain that has a bananas first flush, then I toss it.
